Or maybe it didn't happen: http://cjonline.com/news/2011-04-28/miss-sheriff-online-wbc-reports-are-false Quote Rankin County, Miss., Sheriff Ronnie Pennington said although Westboro Baptist members indicated in advance that they intended to protest at the funeral, none of them came to his county. Of course, if he killed them all and hid the bodies, there would be no one left to complain! but yes, short of total slaughter, they would have already been filing their lawsuits by now. I expect to get a version of this story in my email every few months with the message to “pass it on” if I really care.
lummy 4 #53 April 29, 2011 Apparently, quite a few towns have passed ordinances restricting protests in response to WBC http://www.4029tv.com/r/24250225/detail.html http://www.reviewonline.com/page/content.detail/id/541905/Council-looks-into-ordinance-to-limit-protests-at-military-funerals.html?nav=5008 http://vlex.com/vid/funeral-protest-ordinance-enjoined-67132849 Ok, it's my "opinion" that if there were an ordinance passed in response to a WBC protest in Brandon, we wouldn't be talking about it now Didn't we also have "protest centers" when Bush was in public? IIRC, the protesters were allowed to gather only in preapproved areas that were usually out of the way ok, I see that you're trying to make the point that it never happened in the first placeI promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. San Francisco banned handguns in 2005 knowing that it was illegal and would quickly be killed, but for some reason felt the need to waste a couple million in legal fees to make a statement. Comic-con handled the Phelps nuts better than anyone else thus far, and if people are really interested in how to counter them, that is it.
lawrocket 3 #55 April 29, 2011 Governments may pass "time, place and manner" restrictions on speech. For example, forming a group to block the Oakland Bay Bridge at 700 am on a Monday would be considered something that could be prohibited because of the problems they would cause with traffic, safety, etc. "Do it someplace else" is appropriate. Passing restrictions on the CONTENT is the problem. People want to ban WBC's speech anywhere, anytime and in any way. That's where it's bad. Lawyers call it a "prior restraint on the content of speech."The more common word is "censorship." While I understand what Tink is saying, I STILL have a problem wirh prior restraint of ANY speech. Let's say a law is passed that states a person may nlt yell "fire" in a theater. Makes sense until a fire breaks out. Usually what happens is a person is free to yell FIRE! And if it causes damage, then the person is liable for the damage caused. It's how the Southern Poverty Law Center did in Tom Metzger. He caused a problem- he paid for it. He don't cause no more problems no more... My wife is hotter than your wife.
popsjumper 2 #56 April 30, 2011 I didn't see where anyone was imprisoned. Can you point to that in the article, please? Or, do you equate detention to imprisonment? "It seems that certain Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates..." I took that to mean pickup trucks registered in Rankin county. I hardly think that the county would put their Water Department , et al, trucks out there for something like that. IMO, the goobermint screwed up by getting directly involved. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. lawrocket 3 #57 May 1, 2011 The Fourth Amendment doesn't require imprisonment. It forbids a search or seizure without warrant or probable cause. Imagine you leave your home to go to hold a sign on a streetcorner telling all passers by that your ex-wife is the spawn of Satan and a liar and a goldbrick who tore your heart out and stomped that sucker flat while she is taking a prospective business lead on a tour of the area to spur investment in a new venture. But some oinkers don't think that men and their pea-brained testosterone should be pointing out what a raging bitch your ex-wife is so they decio take you to ask you a few questions about some missing tactical nukes. After rush hour traffic passes, they decide you had nothing to do with it and leave you on the corner, neabing that you lost the chance to get that mesage out. You were detained without probable cause in an effort to prevent you from exercising your rights. It's that simple, really. My wife is hotter than your wife.
