I feel sorry for you

I had no idea you had never been near a college and you are afraid of them

Really, there is no need to be afeared of them

Understanding sarcasm requires a modicum of intelligence. That explains why you don't understand the post you refer to.

LOL:D

I threw out the bait and you swallowed it, hook line and sinker.
Crank, crank, I'm tightening the drag, I've got a live one on the hook!!!

So just now you realize you are one behind and try and save your ass with this??

>Over here on the right side of the U.S. it sounds like the cry of WA! That is, the Wussification of America.

OK, let's see if you really believe this.

Let's say you are running a counseling group for people who have money problems. One of them comes to you for advice. He is looking for a house for his family. His choices are:

-a small house with a fixed rate mortgage he can easily afford

-a medium sized house with a variable rate mortgage; as long as the rate doesn't change, he can barely afford it

-a large house with a variable rate mortgage he cannot afford

How would you advise him?

Probably not the best example. As a counselor, I can only guide him in the decision making process. Therefore, make a list of the +'s and -'s for each possibility. Examine his income potential over the life of the mortgage.

Now, the weasel clause for me here is that I am running a group, your terms. The next step is for each person to present their case to the group for group discussion. Then make a choice.

Do forget, I am/was a substance abuse counselor. The group discussion is everything in my world. We never assume responsibility for client decisions.

Personal example, I was unemployed in 1988. I borrowed $5K and purchased a home with an ARM. I worked various jobs, including professional parachutist, made my mortgage payments on time. In 1998, I sold it and cleared $29K. I purchased the house I am in now, also with an ARM. Before the real estate bust in was worth $250K.

I had faith in the beginning that the Lord would provide a way. He has always provided income to make the payments and put food on the table. Even in the face of long periods of unemployment do to program closures by the federal government.

So, I still do not understand what this has to do with President Bush encouraging the young people at SMU.

It doesn't - he's trying to get you to commit to a specific answer so he can 'gotcha' on one thing or another.

Of course. What would you suggest he consider? Would you suggest that he consider his ability to afford the home he is planning to purchase, and that he should discuss that with the group?

Bill, isn't it obvious? He should advise the man to buy the house he can't afford. That way the man will work harder to try to pay for it and even if he fails, ends up bankrupt and homeless, he's made "progress."

I thought I made it clear. I can't "advise" the client to choose any of the alternatives. I can only guide him on "how" to decide.

My job is to ask questions, not to give answers.

Your example requires a credit counselor.

Sounds like you claim the knowledge but shrug the responsibility.

Weak.

That is the whole point. In my field, the Dept of Children and Families requires that we never assume responsibility for the client. We teach them to accept personal responsibility by making their own decisions.

You are just ignorant of how the social service system works, at least in FL.

Just about everyone is political in one way or another. The game show Survivor is all about interpersonal politics.

And yes, college faculties are highly political in that way -- all the jockeying for tenure, publication, and research facilities and funding.

But that doesn't mean that they base decisions on whether someone has a D or an R after their name. There are politics in schools (ask any kid about who's popular and who isn't). Do you think that's based on party affiliation?
