That young boy has a Medical problem which goes beyond what he eats. I wonder if Lap-band surgery is an option.

I don't know if it's medical or not. Doctors don't seem to think so. The problem is the kid eats more than two full sized adults, and so he is three times the size of a healthy child.

There are always complicating factors, but like they said, more kcals taken in that kcals expended equals gain in weight. He's been to medical doctors. His parents need to see psychiatric doctors.

For this big a problem, when the parents are normal-sized, there's bound to be something besides lazy parents.

And for those of you who believe in lack of personal responsibility as the source of all human problems, well, 3 is a little young to blame for lack of control.

Parents of children with Prader-Willi syndrome have to chain the refrigerator shut and put locks on the pantry.

Understood and agreed. i'm not blaming the kid. He doesn't know any better and doesn't yet have the self control to restrain himself even if he did.

The trouble here is parents falling down on the job.

Bollocks.... You can ONLY put on body mass by shoving stuff in your gob.

Just looking at the child my first thought was that there might be an underlying condition, however if he'd been diagnosed as normal that just leaves the over fed option.

Somehow this jumped out at me:

Here were mine:

"No matter how hard the family restricts Hao's diet <'We have to let him be as if we don't feed him he will cry non-stop'.> and pushes him to move more <Hao hates walking and each day his mother takes him to kindergarten on a motorcycle> the toddler has still managed to put on 10kg (22 lbs) in the past year."

Yeah, fucking unfathomable isn't it?
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

ah look... someone who doesn't know what lap band really does.

it forces you to eat right. if you don't eat right, you end up back in the hospital with complications.

Incorrect. A lap band or any other sort of bariatric surgery doesn't force you to 'eat right', it limits what you can eat at any one time and bad eating habits can still overcome the limitations.

As an example, one of the ladies that had gastric bypass surgery on the same day as my ex that ended up back at her pre-surgery weight after a year.

my point is that unless your habits change you don't lose weight and may end up injuring yourself as a direct result of your eating + lap-band.

I don't need examples, I know 2 women who have recently had lap-band procedures. One is on her second try as she snapped her first one through over-eating. The second has already discovered how to over-eat even with the lap-band.

Yep, its still all about calories in energy out, some patients with bands get around it by liquidizing Mars bars and eating until the band stretches. Not a great idea.

I got slammed by a bunch of lazy people for making this over-simplified statement.

"losing weight (barring medical conditions) is simple. burn more calories than you eat, and keep your metabolism from crashing. "

They all told me that losing weight wasn't easy. Sure... I never said "easy" simple is different from easy.

There were a bunch of qualifications around it about how to eat, and what to eat, and how much exercise to do. But the bottom line boils down to the above.
