Libya : 1st Allied a/c loss .....

Recommended Posts

an american F15. The 2 crewmembers have ejected, 1 has been safely rescued. They are apparently planning the rescue for the 2nd one.
Apparently a mechanical failure, plane has not been reported "shot down"

NPR radio reported both crew rescued, minor injuries. F-15 went down due to mech failure, not Libyan fire.

So they say....... Difficult to prove, when you don't have the wreckage.

It doesn't really matter to me whether the plane went down due to hostile fire or neutral factors. It's operating in a combat zone, so the risks are understood. But I note that at least 1 aviator was rescued by US Marines off the Kearsarge (don't know yet how the US physically picked up the 2nd aviator from the friendly rebels). As much as the US says there won't be US "boots on the ground", rescuing aviators downed over land almost always involves a limited degree of boots on the ground. And then what happens when a rescue squad gets attacked or stranded or captured by hostiles? More rescuers sent after them, of course. "Mission creep" is not too far off, then.

Of course if they had'nt been sticking thier nose into other peoples buisness
they would'nt of lost a plane.

Well, to a degree, all rule of law involves society sticking its nose into other peoples' business, even at the municipal government level. So it's really a debate over "when/'why" and "how much".

Does anyone else's brow furrow just a little when the rebels rush over to the wreckage of a US aircraft and stand all over it?

http://iplextra.indiatimes.com/photo/07ai1LcgKB7Yh?q=Libya

Other photos show the wings and vertical stabilizers largely intact but it's difficult to tell if any US markings are readily apparent, so I suppose they might not know to whom it belonged.

Nope, don't be so hyper-sensitive...... I'm sure we'd do the same - It's not every day that you get an F-15 in your cabbage patch....

Quite.

Quite simplistic.

VERY

'cept it ain't.

yes it is. It's impossible to say that the mechanical failure wouldn't have happened on the next training or patrol flight that aircraft was used on. If the failure was caused by their mission, or by maintenance bypassed because they were in active combat operations, then perhaps the above statement is correct. Without that information, it is incomplete, and over-simplified.

Seems to me that the UN only likes sticking it's nose into other peoples afairs when they can see a financial gain.
Other dictatorships that have no resorces to offer are left the hell alone.

Sveral very different versions floating around at the moment...

Libya: US planes 'dropped two bombs' to protect downed pilot
American Harrier jets dropped two large bombs on Libyan armoured vehicles who posed a threat to a downed pilot, the US military said on Tuesday night.

US denies civilians shot during pilot rescue
The United States military has denied reports civilians were injured during the rescue of a US pilot whose jet crashed while on a mission over Libya.

US jet downed in Libya and rescue plane strafes villagers trying to help pilot
LIBYAN villagers trying to help two US crash pilots were strafed by rescuers. One man lost a leg when an Osprey aircraft opened fire on the anti-Gaddafi crowd. A witness said: “They had all guns blazing.”

Wait didn't I hear that we weren't going to do any troops?

Or is it just on the ground?

What?
