He's more than just an asshole, he's an international terrorist. He personally gave the order to carry out the Lockerbie bombing. I'd just hoped that his own people might be able to do what not even Ronald Reagan could - kill the fucker.
Anyway, here's hoping fuel - and jump - prices start to come back down. I mean, WTF...
Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
QuoteThe rebels claim they need America's help to bring freedom to Libya, and ask for arms and a no-fly zone. But if we DID help them, it wouldn't be long before everyone would hate us for meddling with the internal affairs of another Arab nation, the Libyans themselves would soon turn on Americans and kill any present, and the rest of the extremist Arab world would just see it as more fuel for their anti-American fires.
So, fuck 'em. They can sink or swim on their own. If they want freedom, they can earn it with their own blood.
JohnRich and I finally agree on something.

QuoteMoamar Ghadafi has almost got Libya back under his control now, it might only take a few more days. While the west does nothing. Ghadafi says the rebels will be "forgiven", which might mean a speedy execution with an AK-47, but I doubt it.
So what has the west been doing ? Well, we've frozen a lot of his bank accounts, that's nice. Oh, and France officially recognized the rebels as the legitimate government of all Libya, very nice indeed. But impose a no-fly zone ? Well.... that's "difficult", i.e. expensive. The Europeans won't do ANYTHING expensive. Hell, they allowed the slaughterhouse in Yugoslavia to go on for years, while they sat back on their asses sipping champagne. The U.S. is feeling a little tired from prosecuting two wars already and we should feel sick and tired of having to stand in for the fucking Euros every time they won't lift a finger.
But we're going to allow the Bomber of Lockerbie a new lease on life and probably a lifelong hold on power. Just like we're standing by while Saudi troops move into dubai to quell pro-deomocracy demonstrations there. I suppose the tradeoff is that we might (or might not) see prices at the gas pump return to a more comfy level.
It's disgusting.
Bahrain, not Dubai.
And one of the main sticking points so far with the no-fly zone has been getting the US on board. Britain and France have been pushing for it for some time - only now is the US agreeing to it.
Remember, imposing a no-fly zone is not as simple as just sticking some jets overhead and saying "don't go near there, stay away from the river." "But Betty." (2 points for the film reference)

That's not to say that it couldn't be dealt with easily enough by Western military forces... but it would have to be dealt with before trying to enforce a no-fly zone.

(2 points for the film reference)It may well mean a week or two of hitting ground targets to knock out air defence systems. The Libyan SAM network is not to be taken lightly.

If they wanted to impose a no fly zone, they should have done it a long time ago. Ghadafi's forces are fully mobilized and it won't be long until he has complete control of the country again. If we stepped in now, all it would do is prolong the blood shed, cost millions, and Ghadafi would still be in control in the end.....
That said, Obama, the foreign policy genius that he is, will probably set up a no fly zone in a couple of more weeks.

Quote[Reply]NOTE TO ALL: Insurgencies favor the status quo, not the other way around. History shows that revolts seldom succeed. For the most part, they are brutally suppressed
On a related note, successful insurgencies rarely change the status quo. Either they fail (most of them) or they change the leadership but keep the same operating instructions. They switch usually just switch the despots.

It's not like anyone has tried to identify who the opposition was and what their vision of the future was anyway....

Correct. And making military attacks on installations on foreign soil, and shooting down their jets over their own country, is an act of war. I don't think America is willing to start another war. That would make us the aggressor again against another Arab nation, and only strengthen the view of the muslim extremists against us.
The Arabs need to suck it up and take care of their own business, instead of crying for America to do it for them.

The Texicans have shown the way in that respect for over 20 years....
I guess it's just another example of President Obama trying to outdo Bush. Dunya presided over record deficits? Fuck him. I'll ask for deficits that will make him look puny.
Dubya golfed once or twice a month? Ha. I'll hit fifty outings in my first 24 months.
Jeanne - do you find it interesting that you are comparing him to Dubya to defend him? Oh, I know, the same people criticizing Obama defended Bush for the same thing. Just as hypocritical as those who criticized Dubya defending Obama for it.
