Why is beating others over the head so attractive?

while the writers's grammar and spelling indicates a third grade education and lack of spell check abilities.

How can I take you seriously when you insert an extra S in there???

Did you ever read "Flatland"?

It's a classic of sorts, mostly among math geeks.

never heard of it, I'll find it and see if you're mocking me or if it's a good read.. :D

heck, I like math, and I'm a geek, and....what was that 3rd thing...?

Well stated. I came here 2 years ago with the sole purpose of posting positive Christian messages. I thought maybe one a week would be an easy goal and would stimulate my Scriptural research and study. My first post was attacked so viciously it made my heart pound. So, I changed my goal.

I decided I would use SC as my personal channel for growth and therapy. That path has many, many options for me.

In other words, you're beating people over the head with your beliefs.

Nothing "positive" about it in my book -- I used to be a Christian and I know the essence of what it is: believe what I believe, or rot in hell forever. To me, that's a subtle form of hate (not-so-cleverly disguised as "love"), and quite worthy of contempt.

Keep it comin', Stevebabin.

Nope, that is not what I meant by personal growth and therapy. I am/was a professional counselor. I think in a different context than the general population.

Everyone thinks in a different context than the general population. :P

That is true, the Eastern term is "Maya." It means the illusion of reality. That is why those that claim there is only one reality yet to be discovered have so much difficulty with spiritual, supernatural, metaphysical thinking.

So there is no such thing as reality? There are just a bunch of entangled fantasies ... guess I can start doing what I want, when I want because nothing is real!

I think some people have some trouble seeing the distinction between reality and their own perception of it. They are two different things - but there is still an unchanging reality that we perceive only imperfectly through the medium of our senses, our reason, society and belief.

Wait, you mean there is only one reality and that our senses limit our perception of that reality ... darn it, I was looking forward to doing whatever I want, whenever I want. :P

Sorry, I'm a little confused by what you're trying to say here. My understanding of "Maya" is that it has to do with the illusion that there is more than one reality. That those who are enlightened realize that everything - the spriritual, supernatural, metaphysical, etc. is all part of the singular reality. Which seems to be the opposite of what you're saying. (???)

OK, so.... Why would the enlightened people (those who realize that there is only one reality) have any "difficulty with spiritual, supernatural, metaphysical thinking"? Seems like they would just see all of that stuff as part of reality.

Who among us here, SC, would you consider enlightened?

No one. Mostly because I don't typically think in those terms. Enlightenment is highly subjective, and therefore somewhat meaningless. (Those who are enlightened will agree with me here. :P)

Seems like half of the arguments consist of people beating each other over the head.

That's hilarious. Sometimes, my left hand goes too fast. Never understood why.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

That is too easy; dogs are such vulgar animals.

I bet you do. the rest of us drive on roads

A road, even if you discount the unevenness of the surface, is 2 dimensions. The only way driving is one-dimensional is if you live on a line - as a line is defined in geometry.

Am I not supposed to take this seriously?

Or maybe it is because they do not put much credence in things that can only be shown to exist as wishful thoughts and vivid imaginations.

You came to this forum for that?!
