TSA Scanner Radiation Report Released Today?

Recommended Posts

Seems suspect to me

The Transportation Security Administration announced Friday that it would retest every full-body X-ray scanner that emits ionizing radiation — 247 machines at 38 airports — after maintenance records on some of the devices showed radiation levels 10 times higher than expected.

Wow, you must look shifty when you travel.:P

The rest is not directed and Phreezone

Aren't these things for like a 10% random testing thing? and then only 10% of those asked are felt up?

TSA is screwed up sure, but lest be factual.

Of course, I still see no need for a machine of this type, if not applied safely and for ALL.

YAY! I've only passed through them 15-20 times in the last 6 weeks.

Does this concern you?

I used to fly just about as much and it's still a possibility for me...

I would be pissed.

I'd definately be choosing the feel up option.

I might be ignorant and paranoid, but exposure to radiation that frequently just doesn't seem right.

Most airports are moving to a "Scan as much as possible" option. I have been through 6 airports in the last month. All were using the scanners but since the machines take 30-60+ seconds per person to scan and get the results back they were sending people through the metal detectors to keep things moving or else the lines would take hours to get through with only 1-2 machines per terminal entrance at most airports. The metal detectors run 3+ people per minute and the back scatter is lucky to do one per minute. Basically they scan until the lines get backed up and then send to the metal detectors until the scanner is able to take the next person.

Pat downs are now any time anything is "questionable" on the backscatter. II did find out that wearing cargo pants is basically an invitation for pat down since and this is a direct quote from the TSA agent "Your clothing is too thick and we can't see through it to see what you are hiding". I've got patted down every time I wear my cargo pants but my dress slacks are fine.

Annoyances for these are every single airport tells you to do something different. I've been yelled at by multiple TSA agents for moving my hands or doing something that the airport I flew out of that morning told me to do. Some want the hands in front of the eyes, some want them above your head, one wanted them palms in for the stance.

As a frequent flyer it does annoy me seriously but I watched the outcome of trying to argue with the TSA last week when someone was complaining that he was getting a full pat down due to his belt triggering. He wanted them to wand him to narrow down the search area but they insisted on full public pat down. He complained and Airport Security was called. I had to walk away at that point but I would to have loved to see how little process was made on that argument. I have a generally low opinion of TSA but can't complain since its easy to get on a no fly list.

Where the heck do you fly?

This year has been CMH, DWF, STL, BDL, EWR, PHL, MCO, SAV, ATL and IAD so far since mid Jan. :S I'm hoping to get around 55K on AA this year with 7-10k on others but I should do about 100-120 segments. [:/]

CMH (my home) is now sending all "frequent" flyers through the scanners since that line is shorter. That annoys me since the line is shorter since you fly a lot but they also make you do the Xray (they don't have millimeter wave at CMH in B terminal) since its shorter and do not offer bypass. If you want bypass you have to hit the general line and its a much longer, slower process with random scans still.

I've also noticed that if the machine is slow getting an answer back or has not completed its processing some of the TSA just seem to be moving straight to pat down to clear the person and get to the next even if the pat down is not required.

You raise a great point on them not being badged when working on either the full body scanners or most the other Xray gear around an airport.
