Should People Without Children Be Given Tax Incentives

Recommended Posts

You don't pay taxes to other peoples kids, or to the army or to any other pot for that matter. You pay taxes to the GOVERNMENT and they decide, on your behalf where the funds are spent.

You select the government that you want, based upon the loose promises that the make you, about where the monies are spent.

Oh and if you don't like the choices of government open to you at selection time ... Start your own... or suck it up cup cake.

>We tried that, it doesn't work.

Doesn't work to accomplish what? Educated people? Works pretty well for that; our birthrate is below replacement rates now, which is a good thing since we still see a lot of immigration (both legal and illegal.)

I think people respond more to things that hit them harder in their wallet than any other methods. Imposing heavy taxes on those who want to have children is the most effective way of controlling population growth. Something has to be done. The Earth is quickly reaching it's tipping point on population growth.

I'm not talking about how to control it in the US. I'm also talking about how the US can affect the worlds population growth. Don't you think we at least need to try so that future generations will not be left with a world stripped bare of natural resources?

Then why are you against taking away the tax incentives that encourage people to have children. You're suggesting giving incentives for having children AND not having children.

.

Huh??

Rehmwa suggested “the fix would be to delete the incentives in the first place”.

You said you disagree.
Taking away tax breaks for people that have children would "hit them harder in their wallet"

I'm suggesting that beyond the ideological world in which government stopped giving tax incentives in general, that people who decide not to have children should be given the "reward" of a tax incentive and that those who choose to have children should be saddle with higher tax rates since they and their offspring would consume more resources and require disproportinate government services.

>Culturally many societies such as those in 3rd world countries believe in having

So did the US, at one point. In 1915 average household size was 4.5. Now it's 2.6. (Household size is not the same as family size, but they are very closely related.) So we've gone in a similar direction.

In the early days of the US, people needed to have a lot of kids to ensure enough labor to maintain farms and to ensure that several kids survived. (30% of children died before reaching the age of 16.) That was our culture. We changed; they can too.

>Sure, education would be best in the long term but you are talking about
>overcoming many generations of culture.

True - change like that doesn't happen overnight.
