Skyrad 0 #1 March 8, 2011 Are HM Gov plans to reduce prisoners simply another cost cutting exercise? http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20110307/tuk-labour-slams-clarke-over-prisoner-pl-45dbed5.htmlWhen an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. nigel99 650 #2 March 8, 2011 Not sure if prison works in the first place and it costs us money. I figure we should just ship the convicts off to the colonies and let them deal with it.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. Skyrad 0 #3 March 8, 2011 Sounds like a splendid idea Nigel, South Georgia and East Falkland to start with! Then we could just put them on a plane to the USA and get them to claim political asylum instead and let the Americans deal with them. When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Skyrad 0 #4 March 8, 2011 What should the point of prison be? Rehabilitation or punishment? Are the two concepts compatible? When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. metalslug 36 #5 March 8, 2011 Quote What should the point of prison be? Rehabilitation or punishment? Are the two concepts compatible? IMO prison is punishment, and is very seldom related to rehabilitation. While it is certainly true that some convicts rehabilitate while in prison, I am not convinced that prison itself should take credit. There are thousands of people the world over who have, or had, suspended sentences and who have since remained clean without spending a day in prison. Conversely, career criminals exist who have spent half their lives in prison and never rehabilitate. The "point" of prison; Crimes cannot be ignored, actions are necessary to discourage crime, and to protect society from criminals. Since it would be somewhat extreme to execute all criminals, we have prisons.

Andrewwhyte 1 #9 March 8, 2011 QuoteWhat should the point of prison be? Rehabilitation or punishment? Are the two concepts compatible? The point is to have a lower crime rate. Rehabilitation, deterrence and protection of society all have a part to play, as does cost. Punishment, other than its role in deterrence, has no value worth pursuing.
