GPS Locators in Firearms?

>So you would only track guns that are moving

I'd only track guns that have been fired, say within the last 12 hours. Only tracking guns that are moving is another potential option.

Well, if you're going to go with make-believe technology, why not go whole hog.

If you were investigating a murder, would you rather have 27 leads or none?

I'd rather have one good lead, not 27 false ones

If you want to put GPS on pork based farm animals, start a new thread. This is about hunters being able to find their way out of the woods. I'm pretty sure that's it, anyway. Some kind of neat firearms marketing gimmick.

What we really need if a law like this ever passes, is the production rights to very cheap and disposable guns. One would make a ton of ca$h.

And, even if I don't want a gun, but can't afford a GPS - I wonder if the government would pay for the GPS under the new gun tracking rule.

That way, if I want a cheap (FREE!!) GPS, I could take an old gun in. And I could take it into any building I wanted to - if they point to the sign "NO Guns Permitted in this Building" - I could just claim I don't want to get lost.

OK.

Now, since you refuse to answer the question, I'll answer for you - investigators prefer having 27 leads than zero. That leads to capturing murderers, which is, to most people, a good thing.

So we will no longer be allowed to keep guns in locked safes?
A locked safe is, after all, a Faraday cage.

I did answer the question, based on the reality of talking with police instead of watching CSI.

Yes, it is. It also works better and faster with solid leads, not false ones.

Why would you want to track a gun in a locked gun safe?

So you have no problem with a gun's GPS unit being unreachable?
Thanks!
That make it much easier to move it.:D

So looking at a murder scene, and knowing that the gun that was used is now a mile north of your present location, would be of no real use?

How would you know which weapon was used?

I would guess that would mean tracking all guns at all times
Then you just check the time of the crime against which weapons were there at the time

actually, that's a really good idea

I think this idea then follows the trend

I think anytime anyone is going to express and opinion publicly he/she must have a recording device running to record the event

ALL publicly stated opinions must be recorded by a person certified by the state

so you're going to ask the judge to issue a warrant because they were in the vicinity with their legally purchased, legally carried, unmodified chipped, tracked firearm??

There can't be ANY room for mistakes, or possibilities for abuse of power in that scenario can there?

>How would you know which weapon was used?

Let's imagine what such a report might look like:

12/22/01 18:35 Weapon discharge - reporting enabled for ident 755456
12/22/01 18:35 Ident 755456 Location 34.0526,-118.2462
12/22/01 18:35 Ident 755456 Weapon discharge
12/22/01 18:35 Ident 755456 Weapon discharge
12/22/01 18:36 Ident 755456 Weapon discharge
12/22/01 18:37 Ident 755456 Location 34.0526,-118.2462
12/22/01 18:38 Ident 755456 Location 34.0586,-118.2446
12/22/01 18:39 Ident 755456 Location 34.0691,-118.2597
12/22/01 18:40 Ident 755456 Location 34.0742,-118.2588
12/22/01 18:41 Ident 755456 Location 34.0742,-118.2588
12/22/01 18:42 Ident 755456 Location 34.0742,-118.2588
12/22/01 18:43 Ident 755456 Location 34.0742,-118.2588

Looking at that report, one might conclude that the weapon with identifier 755456, discharged at 6:35pm at location 34.0526,-118.2462, is now at 34.0742,-118.2588.

If they fired it in the same location, at the same time that the murder occurred - yes.

Which is pretty reasonable. If you walked into a police station and said "so I was at the location of the murder, and I fired my gun near the victim at the same time his death occurred - but it wasn't me" they might ask you a few questions about it, no?

So you want big brother to track every discharge of a weapon?
Wht don't you just GPS every round instead?
We could micro encode every bullet and shell and have the government really looking down our freedom at us.
