Welfare Baby.

My good friend of 10 years is pregnant. She is deciding to keep it and raise it.

Shes 25, dropped out of highschool, has never earned more than 10 dollars an hour and emailed me saying shes "pregnant" She hasn't held a job in over two years and her boyfriend is the same. She can't even afford to live on her own.

Worst part is that beyond being a tattoo artist her boyfriend will not be able to hold a stable job. He's got tattoos all over his knuckles, arms, neck and has 3 in holes in his ears. He hasn't made more than minimum wage in his life and he's almost reaching 30.

The only thing I told her was to make sure that this was what she wants and that she could have an abortion up 26 weeks.

Turns out her mother said the same thing.

I love my friend, but this is going to be a baby raised by government aid and it kills me inside.

Had an old girlfrend who went her own way. She met an out of work bike mechanic, dropped out of school and got pregnant. She started climbing with him. He had a lot of problems - tried to kill her a few times, threw her out a window, strangled her etc. He ended up in jail for domestic violence (against someone else, not her.)

Now her daughter is at Harvard, she has two more daughters, she's remarried and helping her mother run her business. She also got her PhD and teaches part time.

I wouldn't count your friend out yet. People can turn themselves around.

I have a couple of friends whose lives were totally screwed up. Having a baby was the absolute best thing that ever happened to them. After realizing that all of a sudden they were responsible for another human being that had to eat, wear clothes, and needed shelter, they got their act together. One married the father of her baby, who joined the military. She dropped out of college while he was in boot camp and she was pregnant, but went back once they had a life on base and she had a support network of other moms who could babysit. It took her about six years, but she just finished her BA in computer science. Another kicked the loser baby-daddy out of her life (he has court-ordered supervised visitation that he never bothers to make appointments for). She moved back in with her mom, and is going to night school while her mom is home in the evenings to babysit.

So there is hope for your friend. Don't judge, she's pregnant, and what's done is done, because no woman should be encouraged to abort if that's not what she wants. Just be there for her, and recognize that she's going to need a lot of support because most of her friends are not going to want to hang out with her once a baby is in the picture. With everything that's going on with her body, she may be better off taking a semester or two off, but encourage her to go back to school later on.

I have to agree. I can't say that I've know anyone to turn them selves around though. It all boils down to if they want to. Hopefully she is mature enough to know that if she keeps the baby, her social life is over and the next several years are work.

If she doesn't understand that and wants to keep "hangin out with her buds" or what ever she is doing now, her best but is abortion or give it up for adoption. She won't be able to provide a good life for her kid.

That's a great story Bill. Most of the children in this scenario end up in a bio-hazard bag at the back of some abortion clinic. But that's OK with the pro-choice crowd....
