Check out my new "evil black gun"

I got to play with one (SCAR), but I wouldn't call it any experience. Only got to run a mag through it. It was OK. I didn't get all excited about it, but it was neat. What do you want to bet that 'ol LouDiamond has got to put a few hundred through one of them?

I've played with the SCAR family of weapons a time or two.:)
In a nut shell, I am not a fan of the 5.56 model but the 7.62 model has it's merits on caliber alone. The SCAR has some nice features that took a while to smooth out, early versions were not well received as they had some user interface issues that needed to be corrected. The fact that they are piston driven and you can fire mag after mag on full auto and the weapon can still be handled with bare hands is a plus. Having been on the two way rifle range once or twice, I appreciated this benefit of the piston system. The ergonomics of the weapon is really user preference in some cases and I won't bother to cover them point by point as it very well could be the opposite for others, you simply have to hold it and fire it to come to your own conclusions.

I do like the EGLM a lot simply because it is modular and can go from weapon mounted to stand alone weapon system relatively easily and the manner in which it loads in contrast to the old M-203. I'm a fan of the old M-79 and the EGLM reminds me of a modern day improved version.

The SV version in 7.62 was a novel idea but anyone who is serious about long gunning has issues with this variant as it's performance isn't up to mosts standards.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase this weapon, especially at the prices they are asking for them on the open market. For those not using their weapon systems for their intended purpose, there are less expensive alternatives than the SCAR 5.56 that in some cases perform better, the same can be said for the 7.62 version. Shooting either caliber these days on your own dime can get expensive fast. The 7.62 version fills a gap in the military that is currently needed/wanted by some but again ,it's about caliber not specifically the SCAR platform.

I have found that a good way to run a black gun platform and to stay proficient while not breaking the bank is to invest in a dedicated 22 caliber clone, such as the S&W 15-22 MOE, etc set up the same as the 5.56 model one owns. You can spend a day at the range working drills and only spend a fraction of what you would on 5.56 ammo, plus they are fun to shoot.

Thanks for the confirmation. There is a review of this weapon in the American Rifleman, Dec 2010, MSRP $569. I found less expensive deals online.

:P

I'm right there with you on using .22s for practice. While I've never used a .22 AR knock off, I've made it a point to pick up a .22 conversion kit or .22 version of any pistol issued for use in the real world. Running through rounds is a lot less painful, and a coworker doesn't mind bringing his can to the range for practice. You know it's good when the only way to know we're firing is to listen for the action to cycle.

Nothing really compared to shooting each other with simunition, though. We actually got our trainers to change what they teach in initial training and inservice updates after we "killed" them ten times out of ten. All their idea, of course. Nothing to do with the pink splotches on their shirts. :)

After getting to do a lot of training with sim guns, man someone could make a LOT of money running an "advanced tactical simulator" shop. Sort of like a paintball field, but in an old office building, with sim guns. Better than paintball or airsoft any day of the week.

Sims and blue barrels for the weapons are crazy expensive so it's not really something most would want to invest in as the overhead would outweigh the income. Plus, Sims can cause injury /death if used incorrectly against another person, not to mention they hurt a whole lot more than paintballs. Getting hit with Sims at a reasonable distance still makes you realize you just got shot and that a real bullet would hurt slightly more and there would be blood. When doing force on force with Sims, most guys who've done it before shoot each other in the extremities (legs, arms) since everyone is wearing body armor. Nothing sucks more than engaging a guy center mass and he continues to fire back hitting you in the soft parts, new guys learn this one quick. It only takes a few rounds and 3-4 weeks of having a black bruise for a leg to drive the point home. :)
I honestly think if most civilians did this like paintball, it would be short lived as all it would take is for one round to hit them before they called it quits, pain is a powerful (de)motivator.

Oh, I know. Trust me I know. Although we don't typically wear body armor while doing the training. B|

You can't lie, though, it *is* fun!;)
