Kennedy 0 #1 February 1, 2011 Bill would require all S.D. citizens to buy a gun QuoteFive South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.” The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm. Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.” snipwitty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

wmw999 2,588 #3 February 1, 2011 As I mentioned in the PM I sent (nope, I didn't notice it was clicky There isn't a good solution. There isn't a pretty solution. But we're pretty sure we're not going to let the cute little 5-year-old die from septicemia because she couldn't afford the ER, and both costs and capabilities are going up nearly geometrically. Income is not. Wendy P. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. I think is a good example of you missing the point. I agree wholeheartedly with the guy who proposed the bill, and hope it never becomes law. See the post above yours that quotes the rest of the article. I read the bill, and passing it would be as bad as ObamaCare. The difference is I'm consistently against this (and in good company with a number of courts). You seem to be a bit hypocritical in picking and chosing what the government should tell people what to buy.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I don't ask anyone to predict insanity, just to diligently report disqualifying conditions. I also ask that the state maintains its database, and that all purchases are given a background check - no exceptions. Doesn't infringe on anyone's rights.... I could take any random sampling of 5 SD citizens and know that they will oppose ObamaCare. I do believe in fining legislators who put forth legislation they know is bad, "just to prove a point." Hanging is suitable when they openly admit as much.

You seem to be a bit hypocritical in picking and chosing what the government should tell people what to buy. I whole wholeheartedly agree with you. But if Obama-care passes, should take this law a step further? If you choose not to buy a gun, you should be fined. If you can't afford to buy a gun, the government should increase taxes on the rich to purchase a gun for you. And if you can't afford ammo, you should be given xxx rounds of your choice for your weapon. Your going to need them for your mandated shooting classes. After all, it's for your personal safety right? It's the governments job to keep us safe."There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. DanG 1 #13 February 2, 2011 Yes, but to really mirror the healthcare system we have right now, you should also be allowed to go to the firing range anytime you want, and if you can't afford ammo, the range has to provide it for you for free. Not the good stuff, but enough to keep you adequately trained. To pay for it, they just charge their other customers. - Dan G

I would not. However, you seem to think it is fine to mandate it when it comes to the things you like, and shriek at it when it comes to something you don't support.... How do you explain your incredible inconsistency?

davjohns 1 #21 February 2, 2011 I'm all for this law...comes with a public financed option, right? Seriously. This is almost what Israel does. Try finding a household that doesn't have a military weapon and multiple people qualified to use it. That's why people have to lob rockets at Israel. You don't dare walk in and start garbage.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.
