QuoteI have been told by a usually knowledgeable source on such matters that Texas has an effective screening process for issuing CCW permits. Assuming this to be true, maybe said process could be extended to gun purchases.
Sure thing - after it's done for speech, voting, etc...

I see Mental Health professionals who come up with the wrong diagnosis all the time.
Yup, the average for dianosis of for Bipolar disorder is 10 years from onset of symptoms. Very, very poor. I'm convinced that we will someday in my lifetime look back on current mental health treatment and diagnosis the way we currently look back on practices like bleeding for illness.
I do not want rights based on a system that is this prone to error.

Got a link to this?
In IA a NICS check is not required but the requirements we do have cover this
I wish to see if IA is in the 33 you post to
Well, look it up then. You live there, should be easy enough for you.

Here, Marc, I'll save your precious time:
Presently, 17 states regulate private firearm sales at gun shows on their own. Seven states require background checks on all gun sales at gun shows (California, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Oregon, New York, Illinois and Colorado). Four states (Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) require background checks on all handgun, but not long gun, purchasers at gun shows. Five states require individuals to obtain a permit to purchase handguns that involves a background check (Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Iowa, Nebraska). Certain counties in Florida require background checks on all private sales of handguns at gun shows. The remaining 33 states do not restrict private, intrastate sales of firearms at gun shows in any manner.

QuoteThere are all types of mental illness. Some do not pose a threat to anyone.
I wonder how many alcoholics for example, have mental illness. Should they too be banned from owning a gun too.
Alcoholism often results in behavior that does pose a threat to others, such as drunk driving and other violent behavior. But I suppose it is the actual dangerous behavior that should preclude one from owning a gun, rather than the alcoholism itself. I would hate to think that a law-abiding alcoholic (or anyone else with mental health issues) would avoid seeking professional treatment due to a lack of privacy and a potential of having his rights taken away.
QuoteAnother problem, is that it is not always easy to diagnose if a person truly is a threat. It isn't like you can go in and get a quick scan for say a broken leg. The human brain is much more complicated than that.
Yes, I think this is one of the main problems.

We already have laws prohibiting many criminals from owning firearms.
In many places this is not enforced, though. I know of two convicted felons who have gone to prison for violent crimes. Both of them own rifles and hunt each fall. Maybe we need to enforce the laws we already have on the books, and forget about inventing new ones....
We drive fast cars, drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, say "fuck" and "sex" in TV, see boobs in advertisement or at the beach and don't go to church.
Maybe we are so much more open minded, because we dont waste our time with sick discussions about psych tests for mentally ill people, who should get ammo in the supermarket, because everything is so free in your so free country.

There are STILL Americans over there keeping the MORONS from cleansing each other.

Don't let the American nuts get to you. America arose out of ashes. But they don't get it yet. They'll continue to wonder why we are stuck in the position we're in all the way down to the last second before the fall.
You have it right...well, except for the part about having ALL the cultural people. We do have one or two. You can't find them, but they are out there somewhere, I'm sure.

Should every gun owner be mandated to obtain a year's worth of therapy, and then let some ding dong therapist decide whether this client is safe to own a gun. I think not!
