Critics slam Georgia paper for doctored photo of governor as Nazi

Recommended Posts

I don't usually post about this kind of stuff, but this article really pissed me off:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/01/25/georgia.governor.photo/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn

Atlanta (CNN) -- A Spanish-language newspaper in Georgia has drawn bipartisan criticism for publishing a doctored photograph depicting the state's new governor as a Nazi.

El Nuevo Georgia editor Rafael Navarro said the picture was meant to call attention to Hispanic issues -- and grab the attention of residents and politicians who often ignore the Hispanic community.

"Americans don't read our paper because they can't read Spanish. They don't read our news, our editorials and the opinion of the community. But if they see a picture, they'll get it." he said.

That's one of the most ignorant arguments I've ever heard. Honestly? If you'd like Americans to read your articles and opinions then print them in ENGLISH.

So as I understand their issues - They are upset that not enough non-spanish speaking people are reading their spanish language news paper, so they decided to try to offend a lot of people. Or am I missing something.

That's exactly what I got from the article. What's Spanish for "ass gaskets"?

Interesting. I think they have a point. More Americans need to learn to speak Spanish to accomodate the illegal aliens. Until the majority bends to the will of these criminals, publishing insults is a perfectly legitimate means of redress.

Wait....

Too many things wrong with that story...
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Eh, people can speak whatever language they want, and can print papers in any language they like; they can also publish insulting pictures if they like.

But he's still an ass.

What about all the legal Spanish speakers?

They have to learn English to become citizens. Reading Spanish papers isn't likely to facilitate that.

I was in Iraq for a year. I learned a great deal of Arabic and Arab ways. I embraced their ways every chance I got. If I was there as a voluntary move, I would definitely seek to become fluent in Arabic. I would never insult the Arabs to try to bring attention to my issues while publishing an English language paper for others like me. I would consider it extremely insulting to my hosts...like this event.

Q: Then why don't they try communicating in a language that the p[oliticians can understand.

A: Because they are just over dramatizing things

And all the citizens that still have Spanish as a first language?

Don't need a Spanish language newspaper.

Yes. A resounding yes.

I disagree. Spanish Language newspapers are fine - whatever language newspapers are fine. Just don't require, insist, or expect the rest of the non language based public to read it. And certainly do not get upset when we don't.

Pic attached below.

Yes, they can print what pictures they like as long as they are not suggesting he actually is a nazi (liable). However, I wonder how they would react to photshopped pictures of Hugo Chavez or Che wearing the swastika and Hitler-stache.

Yes. A resounding yes.

So the only publications in America should be in English and if you prefer to speak Spanish you will never be American.

You are in for a fun time these next couple of decades.

Do you believe people should assimilate when moving to a new country? Do you think they should learn the language most commonly spoken in that country?

And countries should assimilate people. It's a two way street.

Sure. And if they want to keep speaking their native language, that's fine too.

I don’t disagree I’m just trying to find out what HandsomeSalad believes. Being able to speak both languages is great. I often get the impression that when a foreigner moves to the United States it is almost begrudgingly. They want everything this country has to offer but through no further effort on their part other than locating here. If the effort that is spent resisting assimilation was in stead spent learning the language they would be way ahead of the game.

Why no criticism about the possible violence it could provoke?
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am
