The hike increases the state’s personal income tax rate from 3 percent to 5 percent.

I believe stating a 66% increase is a lot more sensational than stating a rise from 3% to 5% ...

I read it and believe that the media (and you) are focusing on 66% because it is more sensational than 2% ... As far as the business increases, they're less than the personal increases.

The tax hike will be coupled with strict 2 percent limits on spending growth. If officials spend above those limits, the tax increase will automatically be canceled. The plan’s supporters warned that rising pension and health care costs probably will eat up all the spending allowed by the caps, forcing cuts in other areas of government.

I feel this paragraph is more important because other countries have shown and or are showing the problems with raising taxes to pay rising pension and health care costs while cutting other areas of the government ...

Well, at least the story had some bottom-line truth in it...

"We’re saying to the people of Illinois, ‘For eight years we’ve overspent, now we’re going to make it your problem,”‘ said Rep. Roger Eddy (R-Hutsonville.) “We’re making up for our mistakes on your back.”
My reality and yours are quite different.

this will increase unemployment in Illinois. The companies that employ thousands of people that can move out of state will because the cost savings will pay for the move. Illinois is already one of the least freindly states to corporations and now is going to be worse. It will be like new jersy and oregon that raised taxes on the wealthy and lost revenue due to them moving to another place.

I had that exact discussion with a school official about an education tax levy - they would only quote the fractional percent number and absolutely refused to provide the actual dollars change from before to after or the proportional increase of the school budget itself - after the question was asked 4 times over 3 days.

And the fractional number was specifically quoted as part of the total property tax increase and they wouldn't separate out the non-school portion specifically (so the increase was diluted by including fire, admin, police portions) so we could actually see how many dollars MORE they were actually shooting for.

they were slimy/slippery about it and kept trying to digress to the emotional justification

That's what it takes to have decent schools, roads, and other services.

It's about time our politicians grew a pair and brought revenues in line with expenditures instead of borrowing from our children and grandchildren. I'm sure there are some short-sighted morons among the voting population who will object.

Un-freakin-believable.
Again...read it and weep. Now tell me again about your short-sighted morons.

How about if, instead of raising taxes, your champions reduce spending? Fiscal responsibility and all that.

If my taxes went from $1500 to $2500, I'd want to know what branch of mathmatics says that is a 2% OR a 3-5% increase.

And they'll spend the next six months squabbling like children and getting nothing done - just as happens here.

Hopefully an adult will come along and say "kids, we have to do both - and each of you has to work with the other."

That branch would be simple percentages. (5th grade?)
if your income is 50000/year, 1% of your income is 500. 3% is 1500. 5% is 2500.

1] You make $50,000 a year and your taxes went up 66%, how much more do you owe per year?

2] You make $50,000 a year and your taxes went up 2%, how much more do you owe per year?

I guess it must be a sensationalistic right wing Chicago paper making false claims
