JohnRich 4 #3 January 7, 2011 Quote"Every party skews the facts to their advantage, and inevitably, the minority party must resort to the truth." I don't agree. There are plenty of times when minority parties lie to try and gain advantage, or to win back the majority. And once in the majority, they often lie to stay there. There are motivations to lie, no matter what the status of their power. In order to believe this quote, you would have to believe that on Dec. 31 the democrats were liars and republicans were all truth. And the very next day on Jan. 1st when the new republican majority took over control of Congress, that those roles instantly switched, and now the democrats are all truth and the republicans are liars. It just ain't so. There are people everywhere who will lie, regardless of their position in power.
kelpdiver 2 #4 January 7, 2011 Quote I don't agree. There are plenty of times when minority parties lie to try and gain advantage, or to win back the majority. Pretty much every time. In the tail end of the Bush Administration, the Democrats declared every problem to be that of his leadership, and the GOP leadership in Congress. When they won back Congress in 2007, and the White House in 2009, everything remained the GOP's fault, it would take long to fix the damage. And immediately the Republicans campaigned that since the Dems owned everything, all decisions were their fault. TARP, for example, has been blamed on both, depending on the timeline. Both engaged in widespread earmarks, both engaged in high spending, both engaged in tax cuts (with different targeted people).

VincePetaccio 0 #6 January 10, 2011 I, too, am a Libertarian. Mostly, though, because I believe in personal freedom; there are many political stances held by the party that I don't really agree with. I think that, for many of them, a view in either "direction" could be extrapolated from a viewpoint supportive of freedom of the individual and smaller government.Come, my friends! davjohns 1 #7 January 10, 2011 (sigh) I appreciate the sentiment of the quote. Political parties tell the truth as a last resort. I don't think the author had the slightest intent to imply that politicians choose the truth first. Maybe this forum should be named the argument forum or disagreement forum.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..
