mnealtx 0 #101 January 5, 2011 Quote>The contortions trying to justify the double standard is like a parent telling their child "If anyone tries to touch you in a bad way, scream and run - unless it's a TSA agent, it's ok if *they* do that". Or like a parent telling a child "if you're lost and anyone tries to help you, scream and run - unless it's a police officer or someone from the family." Non-sequitur - someone helping a lost child isn't portrayed as a bad thing. QuoteOr like a parent telling a child "If anyone tries to touch you there, scream and run - unless it's Doctor Jenny, it's OK if she does that." Non-sequitur again - a child going in for a medical checkup isn't portrayed as a bad thing. QuoteYep, that's a horrible double standard. You'd never teach your children such disgusting double standards, right? Your analogies just keep getting worse. Funny you mention that, given the horrible examples above. QuoteThe odd thing is that I am certain you would not be as socially clueless as you suggest in these threads. I'm sure you would not call a black guy a nigger. That's correct, I wouldn't. I think words like nigger, cracker, kike, chink, and spic are inappropriate regardless of who is saying it. Quite obviously, *your* mileage varies.Mike I love you, Shannon and Jim. Unfortunately, for some stupid ass reason, TEXAS is somehow the big player in what books get bought by school districts nation-wide. I'm not really sure why they hold sway in this area because they certainly don't have the largest population of school-aged children, but for some reason they have a lot of control over the market.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

turtlespeed 226 #112 January 6, 2011 I just have to say that - I can't believe that I am here agreeing with Billvon and Quade on the basic issue here - Saying that - I have yet to hear a couple of jews walking up to each other and saying, "Hey, what's up Kike". Or hear any jewish musician making a record with the lyrics, "What, Kike, wat you like, kike?"I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
Andy9o8 2 #113 January 6, 2011 You know, this really has me thinking. Huck rhymes with "fuck". And yet they didn't re-name Huck to, say, Heck. Hmm, why wouldn't they?? So this reminds me of that kid game where you switch first letters of words; e.g., "fuck you" becomes "yuck foo", etc. Stay with me here. Anyhow, so that would turn "Huck Finn" into "Fuck Hinn". Now that could be seen as a preemptive attack on that Christian huckster Benny Hinn, which means that Samuel Clemens was really an agent of the End of Days. Or, it could be a reference to "Hinn, Hinn, Fuck Hinn!", which of course (of course!) is a code for skydivers. So maybe the message here is that the next time Christian skydivers post here telling us how truly lost we are, we should shut up and listen to them. Things that make you go "Hmmm", indeed. Meso 38 #114 January 6, 2011 Personally I think removing it from a book is stupid and it will remove the effectiveness of the historic situation to a slight extent. But to those who are crying about black people calling each other 'nigga'. The use of the word among the black community (only a portion of) is a way of taking something that was used against them and making it theirs. The same thing happened with the word 'queer', the idea of 'taking words back' doesn't mean that the word can no longer be offensive and it probably would take many many decades before the original meaning is surpassed by the new way it's used. And the main difference is the way it's said and context. There's many black people that don't mind their white friends saying "whassup my nigga". It's not the same as saying something like "that dirty nigger stole my tv"- 'nigga' is the black 'dude'. And considering terms like 'nigger' are still commonly used in society in a racist degrading way, this is very much a present issue and not something to do with slavery etc. It's offensive to many people, and offensive in ways that you won't understand (makes me think of the south park episode addressing this)- but you won't understand unless you and your family have had a history of discrimination and oppression. And if you're white and tell me you find 'cracker' truly offensive, you're talking shit- there's no reason for you to.
