kelpdiver 2 #27 January 3, 2011 QuoteQuoteQuoteQuoteHumans never have and never will be more powerful than Mother Nature. Possibly one of the stupidest things I've ever read. It's not about being "more powerful." It's about fucking it up, which we've proven time and time again we're more than capable of doing. Doubt me? Go for a walk around Chernobyl. You know you can [quite safely] dive Bikini Atoll? Your statement is ridiculous. I dare you to go swimming in the cooling pond at Chernobyl. Before the Chernobyl accident more than 350,000 people lived in the area. Now, the only people that live there are the 400 or so nut jobs that have decided to squat in the post-apololyptic zone. The area is technically off limits, but the government doesn't have the wherewithal to maintain security so indigents sneak in. Naturally, this problem corrects itself after time. The indigents simply die of radiation poisoning. This is your best response? Your claim was that we've fucked up the Earth, time and time again. That you can't (yet) swim in a cooling pond that was messed up 25 years ago means little more than you can't swim in a lava pool in a volcano. Just wait. Volcanic eruptions are about the most devastating natural events our planet seems. It temporarily destroys nearly all life in the vicinity, but also sets it up for an rebirth. Just like any forest fire.

happythoughts 0 #31 January 4, 2011 there are two types of article writers. ones that cover the topic in one article. ones that cover the topic in a series of articles, each more exciting than the least. which one gets more publicity and gets paid more money? lawrocket 3 #32 January 4, 2011 [Reply] Gasoline consumption in the city is at the rate the national average was in the 1920s,[1] Makes sense. Having been to NYC, you can walk most places. You can take the subway or a cab (which means that the cabbie splits your fuel usage with you). Versus a place like Los Angeles, that isn't a hub and spoke. And how's NYC's diesel usage per capita? [Reply] and greenhouse gas emissions are a fraction of the national average, at 7.1 metric tons per person per year, below San Francisco, at 11.2 metric tons, and the national average, at 24.5 metric tons.[2] New York City accounts for only 1% of United States greenhouse gas emissions while housing 2.7% of its population.[2] True. I had a pretty tough time finding power plants in NYC. Power is produced outside of the city by things like coal and hydropower. Sure, you can look withing the city limits and say that greenhouse gases aren't produced. You could also say that Manhattan has fewer Superfund sites per capita than any other places. NYC ships its shit elsewhere. And considering the general lack of single family structures, I don't reckon that the people of NYC have fuel oil boilers in their flats. Rather, I'd think that plenty of electric heating and steam generation is found. So, when measured by emissions produced in the City, yeah. I can see that. But I'll still have to take a look at where NYC gets its power, food, etc. If one cuts out the power produced in NYC, how would it do? [Reply]Looks like NYC is less pollutes less than one third the national average. Tell that to the Jersey landfill industry. [Reply] What was that about being dominated by liberals again? Like taking credit for fewer greenhouse emissions while being the single largest user of energy of any city in North America? My wife is hotter than your wife.
