Austria: Judge Rules That Yodeling Offends Muslims

Seems Another Country Is Losing Rights To Muslims

It seems as though in Austria, the popular yodel is an insult to Muslims.

An Austrian court has recently fined a citizen for yodeling while mowing his lawn, according to a report in The Kronen Zeitung newspaper.

The citizen, 63-year-old Helmut G., was told by the court that his yodeling offended his next-door Muslim neighbors, who accused him of trying to mock and imitate the call of the Muezzin.

In Muslim tradition, the Muezzin is the chosen person at a mosque who leads the call to prayer at Friday services and the five daily times for prayer from one of the mosque's minarets.

The yodel is a song which is sung with an extended note which rapidly and repeatedly changes in pitch and makes a high-low-high-low sound. Developed in the Central Alps as a method of communication between alpine mountaineers or between alpine villages, the yodel later became part of the region's traditional lore and musical expression. The technique is used in many cultures throughout the world and Austria is one of the countries where it is most popular.

Unfortunately for Helmut G., his neighbors were in the middle of a prayer when he started to yodel. The Kronen Zeitung reported that he was fined 800 Euros after judges ruled that he could have tried to offend his neighbors and ridicule their belief.

Helmut G. clarified that “It was not my intention to imitate or insult them. I simply started to yodel a few tunes because I was in such a good mood.”

Another Country Is Losing Right To Muslims

I never knew I had a right to my very own Muslim. Cool.

I never knew you wanted them - I would have given you mine years ago.

hey i want my muslim gimme my muslim.

OK, serious answer: I read this story online about a week ago. The article I read was longer, with more detail. Seems that this is something that was going on for some time - every time the Muslim family started to do their prayers, good ole Helmut would try to disrupt them by yodeling loudly. He wasn't yodeling any other times, just whenever they were starting their prayers; and it was over and over again. So, in that context, his crocodile tears and protest of golly-gosh innocent motives ring pretty hollow.

Having said that, I don't think that what he did merits legal punishment. But I do think he was quite deliberately being a fucking bigoted asshole.

What would/should be his punishment then?

Then eat ding-dongs. Geez.

Well it's certainly an assault on normal ears.

I have normal ears and I would MUCH rather hear yodelling that the Muezzin's call to prayer any time.

Both are assaults to the stomach, actually.

The Muezzin's call to prayer upests your stomach?

Not at all. But both yodels and ding-dongs are something of an affront to good food everywhere.

I think perhaps you have confused the yodelling that the home owner was doing with a sweetish pastry treat.

Well, I guess turn-about is fair play. Now that a legal precedent has been set, any time a Swiss citizen is offended by a muslim call to prayer, they can call the police, sue, and win!

I know they are just tiny little things.. but they tend to get testy when you mistake one European nation for the one next door.

i was just gonna say that, but i might add something to it. switzerland's citizens were lucky enough to vote against any new minarets, which they did, so it may get kinda difficult. germany is different tough, there are places where the muezzin is already established, but we shouldnt be so unfair to confuse john with yet ANOTHER european country..

yet ANOTHER european country

Would that be like the regular comparisons to rednecks by folks on your side of the pond whenever a gun thread comes up?

:):P;)

come on, you yankees are rednecks anyway!
oh, and to my best knowledge, probably my best friend IS a redneck. so i'm not really biased, but also to be honest, he pretty much represents any picture that a random european will have from a (yankee) american.

i do know that california or north carolina are quite some distance from each other. not sure about someone saying austria and switzerland are the same countries... that's kinda like saying texas and california are the same! :D

Yup - and to a lot of Americans, Europe is sort of the same formless mass that America is to a lot of Europeans.

I'm pretty sure it was a goofup on John's part. Hell, I *work* over here and I couldn't tell you how far it is between Austria and Switzerland without consulting a map.

You have to forgive the rather insular Texicans VB... after all you can fit 16.864 Switzerlands into Texicus:ph34r:
