Police ; Heroes or Hellions?

Recommended Posts

Just curious how people on this forum see police.

Are they mostly unselfish individuals who yearn to protect and serve the public , psychotic criminals,or something in between?

Please relate your experiences with police both positive and negative .

Somewhere in between, leaning hard on the side of protect and serve.

I have friends that are LEOs.
I have been in trouble before, in my youth, and was treated fairly.
I have been pulled over for nothing but an excuse and held for hours just because the guy was a dick!
I have filed theft and B&E reports and the LEO was always respectful and nice.

If you can't do the time - don't do the crime - but don't get mad if you get caught doing something you know is wrong to begin with and then get all"WTF?" attitude when you get caught.:D

Only once have I met a LEO that was a prick for the reason of being a prick - maybe he had a really bad week - doesn't justify it, but you can relate to that I am sure.

there was one time a whuffo showed up at skydive USA and was telling us all about what a great skydiver he was going to be (he'd done a tandem and stuck around and gotten drunk). Then he went off on cops to me. I was sitting next to a jumper who was a cop. She nudged me and winked. (I shut up) Dude just kept digging a deeper and deeper hole for himself.

End of the night, the drunk-ass got pissed at us (we moved his car) and called 911 on us. The local cops (who knew us) ended up waiting for this guy to turn off the private airport road onto the public road, and then promptly arrested him for DWI.

Could this have been handled differently?
Was there a way you might have prevented this obviously tormented soul from having even more turmoil in his life?
Just curious.

There was a time when skydivers, especially first timers, were treated as family.

hey look, you're still trolling.

we were joking with him, he took it badly. The cops were not amused. They didn't haul him in for false police report (because we asked them not to), but when he refused to stay on the DZ, they arrested him for DWI.

We could have told him to bugger off when the beer light came on, but we didn't. We sat with him and drank with him. He got a little dickish, moved his car onto the tarmac where some people were playing basketball, so when he was taking a leak, they moved his car to the landing area.

Skydivers, like family, joke with each other.

this guy just didn't take it well.

quit being all Dr Phil on us.

Listen, I'm not accusing you of anything.

I'm simply asking ,for my own education as well as yours,

This "wuffo"(your word) , *who came to your DZ and made a jump*,and then stuck around to drink first timer beer,.. was there some way you guys could have looked out for him a little better?

Let's do our best for our firstimers.
They are us a short time ago.

Over the years I have had the pleasure and displeasure of knowing a number of police officers. Some were highly professional and treated you as a human, while others displayed personal contempt towards you, whether you've done anything wrong or not. I'd like to point out the good ones. One such good guy is my nephew, K-9 officer Ryan Sumner of the Lenexa, KS. Police Dept. and his partner Diesel. Ryan often works with a multi-district drug task force. Last time I was at his house he was just leaving to bust a known heroin house. He is often the first one through the door. He has done one tandem jump (13 years ago, Bram Clemens was his TM at Skydive St.Louis in 1997). He is definitely one of the good guys.

You wrote that a wuffo showed up ,made a jump, sat around with you and "got drunk". Aparrently this guy was "STOKED" as he stated that he was going to become THE BEST SKYDIVER EVER.

Considering that this is a true story,
was there any way you guys could have handled the situation differently?
Sounds to me like we may have lost one who may have been the next Tom Piras .

Sounds to me like you are stretching and reaching to and twisting and spinning to invalidate his actions because you disagree with them.

Not exactly - We must be kept in a relazed, laid back, NDRC drinking pose for that . . .

We haven't heard from "Lucky..." in a few months. You signed up a few months ago... hey... that explains it. The troll balance has been restored!!

You're just avoiding the question but that's OK!

Here are the facts .

You stated that a whuffo showed up at Skydive USA and masde a jump. He hung out the rest of the day .After operations on the day of his first jump he hung around with you and "got drunk",in your presence.

Later you let him drive off knowing that your newest Brother in the Sky was heading for police intervention.

If that all is true ,
I want to be your friend.
I'm sure I can help you.
You may want some mentoring.

I love the smell of a good gang up in the morning!

Myself, I'd have pulled his keys...

everybody has their own ways!

They had the keys, they moved his car off the tarmac.

You are right though, hiding the keys may have been a better way to handle the situation. At least the first timer wouldn't have been thrown into a cage.

we had him convinced to stay, and then he went all asshat and called the cops. then it was between him, the cops and the DZ manager.

I'd just waited for the Cops, as you mentioned, you had a cop on your side...they would have taken him for the lesser charge of drunk and disorderly..JMO , Plus I have done it before!

I regrett the night I gave my brother his keys back, on his word he would just ride home...He was run over on the freeway after losing control of his bike...Killed!

I have never given keys back since!
