dreamdancer 0 #1 December 26, 2010 good work... QuoteThey are the real heroes of the Haitian earthquake disaster, the human catastrophe on America's doorstep which Barack Obama pledged a monumental US humanitarian mission to alleviate. Except these heroes are from America's arch-enemy Cuba, whose doctors and nurses have put US efforts to shame. A medical brigade of 1,200 Cubans is operating all over earthquake-torn and cholera-infected Haiti, as part of Fidel Castro's international medical mission which has won the socialist state many friends, but little international recognition. Observers of the Haiti earthquake could be forgiven for thinking international aid agencies were alone in tackling the devastation that killed 250,000 people and left nearly 1.5 million homeless. In fact, Cuban healthcare workers have been in Haiti since 1998, so when the earthquake struck the 350-strong team jumped into action. And amid the fanfare and publicity surrounding the arrival of help from the US and the UK, hundreds more Cuban doctors, nurses and therapists arrived with barely a mention. Most countries were gone within two months, again leaving the Cubans and Médecins Sans Frontières as the principal healthcare providers for the impoverished Caribbean island. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/cuban-medics-in-haiti-put-the-world-to-shame-2169415.htmlstay away from moving propellers - they bite blue skies from thai sky adventures good solid response-provoking keyboarding

airdvr 210 #3 December 26, 2010 Haiti has always been an impoverished Caribbean island. This in spite of the fact that billions of dollars of aid has been dropped in their lap. Bill Clinton has tried to help for years. You can't fix impoverished. At least the DR on the ohter side of the island has learned the word 'tourism'.Please don't dent the planet. Oh, I think Haiti is but a case in point for the principle that, should you choose to breed like rats, you may expect to live and die like rats. I do, of course, recommend otherwise. kawisixer01 0 #5 December 27, 2010 So if you go volunteer at a soup kitchen, or help habitat for humanity do you do it "for the recognition" of doing something? Do you do it to make yourself look better? Do you tout it to your freinds and collegues to improve your image and make others think highly of you? If you answered yes to any of the above you are a selfish pig. The only reason you should be doing anything is for the self satisfaction of helping others and to make those you are helping feel better. By the sounds of your post I believe this borders on what you are promoting?
Southern_Man 0 #6 December 27, 2010 The U.S. has also had healthcare workers in Haiti for many, many years. I'm sure some other countries have too, but I don't know from personal experience."What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

I realize you are convinced that your standards are universal, but there exists the distinct possiblity that there are a very few people in existence that do not share your values. They must be wrong, of course, but they do not know it. Given that you are the Keeper of The Truth (tm), please be kind to the people who are not as enlightened as are you. It must be a daunting task trying to bring the world up to your level of cosmic awareness. I certainly do not envy your burden. BSBD, Winsor

A hungry family that enjoys a hot meal/soup kitchen could give 2 shits about why you volunteered, 2, Depending on the field of study, listing charitable work and volunteer activities are often put on resumes. All in all, it's likely that if someone volunteers for a number of reasons, they truly enjoy giving back and would probably do it for that reason alone. Hey if you wish to pour all of your countires wealth into supporting a group of people with ZERO impulse control, have at it. Personally I think Haiti needs to be bombed with many tons of morning after pills daily since they can't seem to be very good at keeping their dicks in their pants.
