winsor 236 #27 December 26, 2010 Quote I hope you too have an enjoyable Saturnalia. Almost all the trimmings of Christmas have pagan origins. Name one that did not. The cross would have been viewed as the ultimate in bad taste by those under Roman (pagan) rule - certainly to include Jesus and his followers - since it was a means of execution by torture used exclusively by the Romans, on unruly subjects in particular. It was not until the Romans had successfully hijacked the movement (which was, ironically, geared toward freedom from Rome) that the cross became the symbol of the rebranded movement. Kind of like the mosque in southern Manhattan, eh? Ho Ho Ho (wasn't that the Jolly Green Giant's catch line as well?), Winsor
wolfriverjoe 1,523 #28 December 26, 2010 Quote ...There is no mention as to the date of the birth of Jesus Christ in the bible. There is only about a 1:365.25 chance it was December 25... Less than that actually. The Bible specifically mentions the flocks of sheep having lambs present. Although the Bethlehem area isn't far enough north to have "winter" as we think of it here, it does get colder that time of year. And lambs in December are pretty unlikely. I figured that little paradox out in about 6th grade (I was raised Catholic) and asked my parents about it. My dad, who was a devout Catholic but didn't blindly believe in the more ridiculous aspects, explained about Saturnalia (which is Dec 25th) and the politics of bringing the pagans into the fold. "Wow, so one of your most important holidays is the 25th of December, when you can see for certain that the sun is returning and the days are getting longer again? What a coincidence, that's the day our savior was born!""There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
