GOP Prefers Politics Over National security

Recommended Posts

Why would the GOP oppose the START treaty?
It is of course a rhetorical question, as we all know the answer; they cant let Obama get credit for anything, even it helps the country.

No matter that Kissinger, Baker, Rice and many other prominent retired Republicans are urging the GOP to pass it, If nothing else exposes the new right for what they are, this does; Politics over national security.

"On Nov. 29, all 42 GOP senators signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) stating that they wanted to first pass the tax and government-spending bills before voting on any other matters."

it's as simple as that.

It is simple; Tax cuts for the rich before national security and also deny Obama any acheivments.

National security should always trump politics, This seems obvious to every former living secretary of state.

If you really want security you will support this START treaty being thrown out

So yes
National Security should trump politics

One need only realize that passing the START treaty AND passing the currently debated tax bill are about one thing, Obama! As demonstrated by his comment yesterday, when he said something to the effect that not passing the tax bill could end his presidency. WHAT?? Talk about narcissism.

But back to the START treaty

Something many do not care to learn

Quote

The first thing we must all understand about this treaty is that it forces the United States to reduce unilaterally our forces, such as missiles, bombers and warheads, in order to meet treaty limits. On the other hand, the Russians will actually be allowed to increase their deployed forces because they currently fall below the treaty’s limits. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has been looking at this issue closely. As the vice chairman, I have reviewed the key intelligence on our ability to monitor this treaty and heard from our intelligence professionals. There is no doubt in my mind that the United States cannot reliably verify the treaty’s 1,550 limit on deployed warheads. The administration claims that New START is indispensable to reap the “reset” benefits with Russia. If a fatally flawed arms control agreement is the price of admission to the reset game, our nation is better off if we sit this one out. — Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo.

Kind os sheds a different light on this dont you think?

So I say yet again
Drop the political positioning and kill this treaty
"America will never be destroyed from the outside,
if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
Abraham Lincoln

As tempting as it is to listin to the likes of Limbaugh, Beck and Palin on national security, I think I will stick with these guys:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/01/AR2010120104598.html

You would trust Sen.Kit Bond over the aboved mentioned? What motivation would Kissinger, Easgleburger, Powlle, Shultz, Rice, and Baker have for being in favor of this treaty? not to mention GW 41.

You tell me!
Fact is we are to reduce and they are not in the end

Why do you support the US being weaker?

As for the Washington compost?

You can keep that left wing rag

The tax year ends in 2 weeks. People have to make decisions in December based on the policies of the current year and next year. This is particularly true when substantial change is coming. If the status quo is maintained (to be precise, that all the sunset provisions are allow to expire), then many people would be selling their equities to get their capital gains at the lower rate. Some people might sell equities that were dividend focused. And people at the cusp of AMT taxes (middle class, primarily, though they were never intended to be the target of the AMT) would also need to act or gamble on what might happen with the annual AMT patch process.

OTOH, not ratifying a new START before January doesn't make a lick of difference to national security. Never ratifying it won't make a big difference - the Cold War is over, people! And our most prominent enemies won't sign nor abide by said agreement.

Of course what this comes down to is the GOP saying "We won." Just as Obama said "I won" 2 years ago to push along his preferred agenda. The obvious solution is for the losers to get the tax issues resolved. Then pursue DADT (Obama just end that with a single executive decision) and anything else they want to do before Christmas.

Yes, 'weaker'. Kinda like everest getting 'shorter' when a foot of spindrift is blown off the top.

DUUUUUUUUDES do you have ANY idea at all about how many thermonuclear weapons it takes to destroy life as we have known it for the last 10000 years.

I am thinking that being able to destroy it only 25 times over is still just a tad bit of over kill from the say 30 times over that we have now.

Just sayin

When the US and the Soviet Union had 70some thousand bombs, rather than the 20,000 now (7k active), we somehow survived.

I feel pretty confident that we'll avoid nuclear extinction for the next couple months.
