Are ya'll "rap battling" with bible phrases...?

This thread is... NOW ...stupid.

Armaments Chapter 2, verses 9 through 22.

"O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy."

And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths, and carp and anchovies, and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit-bats and large chu...

Skip a bit, Brother...

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

Song of Solomon 7

How beautiful your sandaled feet, O prince’s daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels, the work of an artist’s hands.
Your navel is a rounded goblet that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat encircled by lilies.
Your breasts are like two fawns, like twin fawns of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.

Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus.
Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.

Your hair is like royal tapestry; the king is held captive by its tresses.
How beautiful you are and how pleasing, my love, with your delights!
Your stature is like that of the palm, and your breasts like clusters of fruit.
I said, “I will climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine, the fragrance of your breath like apples, and your mouth like the best wine.

May the wine go straight to my beloved, flowing gently over lips and teeth.

Exodus 21:7 "When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do."

John 6:60-62
When many of his disciples heard it, they said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Do you take offense at this?

John 6:65-67
And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, "Do you want to go away as well?"

Why do I keep hearing the dueling banjo theme from "Deliverance" in the background?

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Matthew 4:3-11
And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But he answered, "It is written,

"'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

"'He will command his angels concerning you,'

and

"'On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"

Jesus said to him, "Again it is written,

'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

"'You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.'"

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Has anyone read "A History of God"?

It is a fascinating read by a former nun who "saw the light" to steal the phrase.

She looks at how monotheism and religion have evolved as the make up of human society has changed. Essentially the human concept of God has evolved as our emotional needs and requirements change.

In summary God is a man made "being" that fulfils our spiritual needs.

You're not helping your cause.

Psalm 56:5
All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil.

Psalm 119:154
Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise!

Lamentations 3:59
You have seen the wrong done to me, O LORD;judge my cause.

Lamentations 3:58
"You have taken up my cause, O Lord;you have redeemed my life.

Yes, and so I believe that God "exists" in this sense. The belief in God can help (or hurt) people, and therefore "God" can have power through this belief.

Oh, and no, I haven't read that book, but it sounds interesting.

That's pretty much the same conclusion I came to. There are so many gods and even the Christian God is very different depending on who you talk to. I will have to look for that book.

Belief is very powerful.

An interesting fact that I learned from the book is that Muhammed is the most accurately documented major religious figure. It helped of course that he was relatively recent and that factual accounts of his life were written within 30 years of his death. Of course as with all religious texts the Koran has "evolved" since then and parts re-written and expanded over time.

Coreece, you know your quotes, but sometimes placing them in a context, either a Biblical one (i.e. why that single sentence exists), or a your-life one (i.e. why that single sentence is important to you right now) will help.

Very little in this life exists without a context, and quoting single sentences from even the Bible tends to bring out the people who then quote the nasty sentences, also without context.

You use the Bible like a drunk uses a lampost - for support rather than illumination.
