matthewcline 0 #28 December 3, 2010 Probably cause the SEALS didn't translate their Name to mean Seal literally. Or They looked out from the Beaches in SoCal and went "Use that Seal in our Logo" not knowing it was a California Sea Lion. Or In the typed up order to the original Artist they ran out of ink on the ribbon and all the Artist got was"...California Sea L...." MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety. billvon 3,107 #29 December 3, 2010 >Probably cause the SEALS didn't translate their Name to mean Seal literally. I think it's more likely that they'd rather have a walking, fairly agile pinniped as their mascot than a furry slug, myself.

Outside of Alameda Island, my guess is that you are right. The leopard seal is one eating machine. People who are blase about encroaching upon charismatic megafauna's territory are those who have never witnessed them in action. I would not willingly go somewhere that animals like that might conclude that I would do well as a snack. Whatever real estate they occupy, they can have. Amazon 7 #38 December 3, 2010 Amen to that... There is a nice colony of them that live on the South Jetty of the Columbia River. There is some good diving along the 2 mile long getty.. but once in a while things can get "exciting" if one of the big boys wants see what the hell you are doing in HIS territory. kelpdiver 2 #39 December 3, 2010 Quote There are lots of seals in temperate areas. San Francisco Bay is full of them. California has the harbor seals everywhere, and there is a elephant seal colony south of SF at Ano Nuevo. Going further north, I believe you get more of the larger species. Harbor seals tend to be meeker than sea lions - they tend to spy on divers from a distance.

brenthutch 444 #48 December 4, 2010 As I see it there are two possibilities. One: That Beck is trying to make people think that he was a Navy SEAL at some point and time. If that is the case then...douche bag Two: He was given it by a SEAL who condones his wearing of it. If that is the case then I see no harm. Just his way of giving props to some of our operators. My bet is on #
