jgoose71 0 #3 November 18, 2010 QuoteAmerica’s elected and appointed officials ought to be longing to return to their personal lives and private interests. They should feel burdened by their powers, irked with their responsibilities, and embarrassed at their prominence in the public eye. When they say they want to spend more time with their families, they should mean it. How true. They should stop calling these people public servants. We seem to be serving them. I think a good place to start would be term limits and taking away their expense accounts. A congressman's pay is $175,000 a year and that should be that. Stop funding there private parties. In an effort to keep this non-partisan, also because I think it applies across the board, some congressmen (and women) have spent over $1.5 million a year in other perks. I'm not talking security and airplanes either. If it's service, it needs to be a burden."There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." Life, the Universe, and Everything
pirana 0 #4 November 18, 2010 Quote P.J. O'Rourke thinks so. www.weeklystandard.com/articles/i-think-we-lost-election_516690.html I like the comparison to the parent-teacher conference. I hate those. Finally got a teacher this year for my younger daughter who gets that we actually do pay attention to homework and the stuff that comes home, work with our kids on school stuff, and are aware of her strengths and weaknesses. She allows us to look at the paperwork, nod a few times, exchange pleasantries, and be on our way. No 20 minute session reviewing the obvious and pretending we are excited to be there. How refreshing. I do hate that they are horrible at scheduling, with our conference almost always starting after the time it was supposed to be over; but then, we get to be the now-your-back-schedule family." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

wayneflorida 0 #13 November 18, 2010 --"But how do we obtain this cadre of worthy citizens fidgeting unhappily in their honors and dignities? Given that politics is like war even more than it’s like vivisection, we could draft them. In World War II this worked out well. Randomly selected young and fit members of the Greatest Generation performed their duties admirably. Then again, in Vietnam, with the members of the following Notsohotso Generation, this didn’t work out well. Or, rather, it worked out well for the North Vietnamese. "----- This quote grabs my ass. He insults the Vietnam draftee. I would like to see the study that proves they were losers as he implys. I think the draftees are the same in any war (civil war,WWI,WWII, Korea, etc), some good some bad. Why did they have to get drafted, because they weren't so gunho to volunteer. I hate to say it but it was the Greatest Generation that put us in Vietnam. The end result is their fault/legacy. It is their black mark and don't try to move it to their sons and daughters. RIP Phillip, Warren, Justin, Fred, Bill, Kenny, and Glenn. Sorry about the rant.

matthewcline 0 #16 November 18, 2010 I think so too. I do not agree with his dig on the Vietnam Veteran's. I understand his analogy of the Parent Teacher Conference. The only good I see out of this past election is a balance of power and I think history shows us that works out better in the long run. Although I think this will be a short two year run and only one year will be beneficial to us. MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!!
