Pelosi wins Democratic leadership fight

Recommended Posts

Washington (CNN) -- House Democrats voted to make Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, their leader for the 112th Congress Wednesday, overcoming objections from moderates who argued that she was partly responsible for the party's overwhelming defeat at the polls two weeks ago.

Pelosi turned back a challenge from North Carolina Rep. Heath Shuler, a member of the party's diminished centrist "Blue Dog" faction, in a 150 to 43 vote. The speaker -- now set to be House minority leader in January -- retained the solid support of party liberals, who have noted her fundraising prowess and past ability to lead congressional Democrats to power, among other things.

An earlier motion to delay the Democratic leadership vote until December 8 was easily defeated in a 68 to 129 vote. Some rank-and-file members were seeking more time to "fully understand the causes of our historic losses" in the midterm elections, according to the resolution.

Republicans, who won a net gain of at least 61 seats in the elections, will control the House next year. They are expected to be led once again by veteran Ohio Rep. John Boehner, now in line to inherit Pelosi's speaker's gavel.

Democrats avoided a contentious fight for the No. 2 slot between the more moderate Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer -- the current House majority leader -- and the more liberal South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, now the majority whip.

Under a deal brokered by Pelosi, Hoyer will likely become the minority whip in the next Congress -- the second Democrat slot -- while Clyburn will serve as assistant leader -- a newly-created third Democratic position.

Connecticut Rep. John Larson remains Democratic caucus chairman, with California Rep. Xavier Beccera rounding out the leadership as caucus vice chair.

Some defeated Blue Dog members argued that by retaining Pelosi and the rest of the current leadership, Democrats were making it tougher to re-capture the House in the near future.

Pelosi is "the face that defeated us in this last election," Florida Rep. Allen Boyd told CNN. "It seems to me that at some point you have to put your personal agenda and ambitions aside for the good of the country and certainly the party."

"I don't know how we go into these districts like the one I represented ... and recruit good moderate Democrats if you have the same leadership."

On the Republican side of the aisle, Boehner is expected to be followed by Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor -- soon to be majority leader. California Rep. Kevin McCarthy is slated to become majority whip, with Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling and Washington's Cathy McMorris Rodgers filling the fourth and fifth slots.

The massive 80-plus member GOP freshman class will have two representatives in the party's leadership. South Dakota's Kristi Noem and South Carolina's Tim Scott -- one of two new African-American House Republicans -- have expressed interest.

Boehner, who marked his 61st birthday Wednesday, will have to balance competing interests within the suddenly swollen ranks of his party's caucus. The incoming speaker will have to work with the Obama administration on various legislative priorities while also placating Tea Party activists who won seats on a platform of opposing the White House and sticking to strict conservative principles.

don't be so confident.

The only reason she retained it is due her to ability to mobilize support and funding. These will be essential in 2012.

While as the Majority Leader she dragged down the party, the Minority Leader doesn't have the same spotlight. It's now the GOP's fault for things that pass or don't get fixed. And it's no longer possible to blame Obama/Democrats for everything, as could be attempted the past 2 years.

so now we can expect to see a lot of defensive "It's Bamer's fault the economy still sucks" coming from the GOP faithful. And like the blaming of BushCo for all that is bad, this only works for so long.

Well, except by the next election the economy will have begun recovering, so all she has to say is "it worked - are you better off now?" And that's a pretty powerful argument.

Of course, at that point conservatives will have flip-flopped and will be claiming that the TARP was all their idea, that they were the ones pushing for government bailouts etc. Will anyone believe them? I guess we'll find out; there are some dumb people out there.

Oh everybody come off it. The crazy part of the right will still blame Obama and the rest of the dems. They own the presidency and the senate (I lost count, can they still filibuster in the house?).

The more important thing is that it will be an "on" year with the white house up for grabs. That'll bring out the masses, including the folks that voted in Obama and the dem majority. A lot of them stayed home because of the economy and other issues.

Will the dems get as many in 2012 as 2008? No. Will they get a boat load more than 2010? You betcha. Will it be enough to keep the white house and senate or retake the house? I have no idea and will leave it to people with nothing better to do to make the predictions.

Teh economy was recovering, Obama's plans did nothing to help that...If hsi plans worked, why is unemployment still at all time highs everywhere?

I'm sorry; that was a cogent, well-phrased balanced post. It has no place in SC.

Agreed. And the crazy part of the left will blame Bush and the house Republicans.

Also agreed.

Which, I think, is kind of sad. We put all this importance on the presidency, as if the president were a king or something. To 99.9% of the people out there, the local elections are a lot more important, and will do a lot more to affect their lives than who wins the presidency.

Don't want your property taxes to go up? The mayor and city officials will have a lot more to say about that than the federal government. Want more roads? A vote for someone in the state legislature will do a lot more than a vote for Obama (or Palin, or whoever) will. Not only will it have a more local effect, your vote will also be worth more - because far fewer people are voting for city and state officials.

My time could be better spent arguing star wars vs star trek, or .45 vs 9mm. Shit, trying to get Rhys to see reason is less of a waste of time than arguing Rep vs Dem and election results that won't happen for two years.

But no, I'd never say I'm better than you guys. Some others here in the corner, yeah, but no one in here. Go pontificate. I'm going to argue whether Israelis or Arabs have done more wrong. :P
