Interesting. This is a bit earlier than I would have suspected, although not unprecedented. There was a similar debate held in May of 2007. It also forces the four potential candidates currently working on Fox News to cut bait or fish. It will be interesting to see their reaction to that.

I still don't think the eventual nominee will exist that soon for the GOP. This seems more like a race by Nancy to be first, though she also proposed a second one near Super Tuesday.

Some of the current anticipated people are like dead fish - they don't benefit from more exposure. I think we all know who the queen of that group is.

No, you're right. The actual nominee doesn't exist until the primary votes are counted and he (or she) is declared as such by the party.

That said, say you have a million dollar a year deal with Fox News, do you get out of that contract to go to this event which absolutely signals your effort to run in the primary OR do you sit on the sidelines and let somebody else take the lead?

If you're going to be considered a serious candidate by the party, I'm pretty sure you have to attend the event and in doing so, you're absolutely declaring your intentions.

By doing that, I'm nearly certain you have to give up your association with Fox News.

No. It is my belief that the eventually nominee will not have declared by the time this occurs. He may be going through the motions already - publicity, fundraising, doing the Iowa BS.

My expectation is that a candidate will rise out of Congress during the spring/summer sessions. By virtue of actually doing something, he has a leg up on the has-beens and the governor candidates. Of course, if the party of No continues to flounder even with the majority, then it doesn't happen.

I can't think of a single thing one of the "new" kids are going to be able to do between now and Iowa in February of 2012 that's going to set him apart and set him up as leader of the party.

The only people in place to do anything interesting are the establishment Republicans; namely Boehner. Anything in the House is going to have his name on it and he's going to suck up any and all credit. That might even be the "fair" thing for him to do, but it's certainly no departure from the old school established Republicans.

Boehner's promise at attempting to completely dismantle the recently passed health care bill certainly isn't going to win him any support on the left side of the aisle. That's just going to be a futile effort I think because even if he does manage to get something passed in the House, it's never getting past the Senate.

Seriously, what's he going to do, shut down the government by not passing funding on anything? I really don't think he's going to do that no matter what people are saying now. It would just be a childish move with a very high chance of backfiring.

So who remains, Ron Paul Jr? I don't think so.

sure, but he could resurrect Jesus and you still wouldn't vote for him, so frankly, your opinion carries little water. You want them to lose, have a very difficult time detaching yourself from that.

Oh, and we -were- having such a nice conversation. What the fuck?

Where have I said anything in this thread that's partisan? No. It's all just looking at strategies.

Can't a guy look at the players on a team and appreciate what plays they may or may not be making without it being assumed he's rooting for or against them? Can't a guy just enjoy strategy without all the crap assed assumptions?
