Weapons and retarded development

Recommended Posts

I don't agree with everything Freud theorized on, but found this interesting. I assume he meant that an unnatural fear of weapons was involved. Some healthy respect for weapons is only good sense.

"A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity."
-- Sigmund Freud
(1856-1939) Jewish Austrian neurologist, founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychiatry

I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Freud was a vital link in a chain; but just a link, and the chain goes on.

In other words, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I'm sure the quote could be predictably used by people wanting to say that "gun-o-phobes" are a bunch of sexually retarded wussies; but they'd say that anyway.

I love it when someone tries to call me a gun - o - phobe because I wish to ensure that people who wish to own and use them learn how to do so responsibly. I grew up in a family that took pride in our outdoor activities and we handled weapons responsibly from a very early age. Gun Safety is something that needs to be learned ........... so you dont end up with Dick Cheney moments in your life.

Strong fear or positive obsession (to the point that either plays a negative role in your life) with anything is generally due to developmental issues and a lack of emotional maturity.

Freud always gets brought up because people just like saying, "...oh, and you need to get laid."

I am not so sure the "sexual" maturity is correct, but the "emotional" maturity is spot on. Up here north of the border there is a huge segment of the population (predominately urban dwellers) who have little to no exposure to firearms and because of this they have these irrational thoughts that being in the same room as a firearm will result in death. For some reason they are unable to separate the inanimate object from the person who uses the firearm as a weapon.

I am not 100% familiar with exactly what Americans must do to properly obtain the right to own a firearm, but I suspect a little more training in the US couldn't hurt the newbies. Earlier this year here in Canuckistan I took our mandatory firearms training course for anyone who wants to legally own a firearm and it was outstanding training and well worth the money I spent on it. We sat in a classroom for the entire day while the instructor taught us about the history of firearms evolution, taught us the rules and regulations for ownership, storage and transportation and then we spent most of the day with practical hands on experience handling of the various different types of firearms (using blank rounds) proving they were safely unloaded and other handling procedures. Going into the day I had some previous exposure to military semi-automatic rifles from when I was younger but I had no experience with pump actions, bolt actions, lever actions and single shots. But I came away from my training with and an excellent understanding of how to use these other actions.

I know this is asking too much, but it sure would be nice if more people took one of these training classes (even if they have no firearms ownership intentions) and educate themselves on the actual firearms, educate themselves on the actual laws before they engage in the politics of guns. At least up here north of the border there are an awful lot of lies that get spread around by the anti's concerning firearms and most of the time it is people who are just ignorant of how to handle firearms and ignorant on the actual laws because they have zero exposure to firearms.

Guns don't kill people, bullets kill them. Unless of course someone is pistol whipped over the head with a gun. But why go to the extent of getting a firearm to pistol whip someone when almost any object around the house works just as well. B|

OMG Steve.... we agree on something;)

I would go so far as to require a class such as you had as part of say jr high school gym class.

Knowing how to properly handle guns was something my family drilled into me from a very early age, and I see damn little of that in many people. Understanding something comes from knowledge ... not ones ability to whip out some plastic card and buy the thing and a few boxes of ammo.

They have driver's education in HS. Maybe firearms education would be good. My kids owned their own guns from an early age so they would leave mine alone. My daughter shot on a rifle team for three years. I'm a big proponent of an armed citizen, but I'm also a big proponent of responsibility going with rights and privileges.

By the way...in most states in the US, you have to have that state's ID, money and a clean record to buy a firearm.

class? Dayum, when I grew up, the house always had guns, always loaded, and as soon as we could hold one up, we were taught how to use them...I'd say as much of 70 percent of the meat we ate, we killed..

Once again, schools have to pick up the slack for bad/lazy parents![:/]

Not everybody is living down the hillside of Wounded Knee.

I would not like to see the meat which I meet every morning on my dish, such like my neighbour, cats, dogs, rooks, mice (they have the right to live in my garden).

The chances to hunt, shoot and kill my daily food here is quite limited. Thus, shooting skills should be a bit more elaborate.

Hi can,
Interesting. As for what Americans must do to properly obtain the "right" to own a firearm????? We already have the "Right" it's called the 2nd Amendment and it is located in the Bill of Rights. It says,"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." There are no "required" state/federal runned "classes" on firearms. There are lots of safety, training and marksmanship classes available though. 'Don't know if they still do but when I was in the Boy Scouts and the Civil Air Patrol we had Marksmanship as part of the program. Then again, my dad taught me to shoot with our Stevens single shot, bolt action .22 cal. rifle out past the barn plugging tin cans on a log.

Read the section titled "Misattributed"
"In these other passages Freud associates retarded sexual and emotional development not with gun ownership, but with fear and loathing of weapons."
So, he's actually saying that the retarded people are the ones who are afraid of weapons - i.e. the anti-gun liberals...

I like the quote attributed to Ted Nugent better. He may or may not have actually said it but it is still good.

"If guns cause crime, all of mine are defective" :D

The decade of the 80's was from 1980 to 1989. 10 years. If you remove 1980 and 1989 you have 1981 to 1988. 8 years.

Back when I was in the 6th grade we were required to attend a training program that included a bunch of cool things like shooting a bow, shooting an air rifle, conservation, plant identification.... etc.

My parents had already taught me about firearm safety long before the class, but I still found it fun and good.

Regrettably, the anti gun crowd went nuts and demanded that they remove the shooting portion.

See now I consider that a travesty. All of those things are basic skills that all people need, I dont care of you are from New York City or if you live in BFE.

Some people are intent on robbing children of all the fun things and interesting things in life and its not just the anti-gun crowd ... its a bunch of people who are clueless to life outside their safe urban existance and it goes across all political spectrums.

When I was young, I stayed at the YMCA daycare / camp during the summer. We shot BB guns one day per week. We shot bows one day. There was a rotation of activities and a weekly schedule. I don't recall any problems. But then, that's in the south during the 70's.

I went to summer camp in the North. We knitted sox to wear with sandals one day per week. Next day, we made quiche. Next day, we'd go to the fishing pond, and yell "Run away! Run away!". Every morning we'd put on our Che Guevara t-shirts and then start the day with a tree hug. Gosh, the memories flood....

Where I live a gun is a tool. You may not need it every day, but there are are times you will need it. Rabid foxes, bears, coyotes, you name it. And the meat in deer and moose season won't go to waste.

Not everybody is living down the hillside of Wounded Knee.

If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.

....and that's a good thing. How I wish that my Dad was and outdoorsman. What little info I got was from a neighbor who took pity on me and took me camping and such including lots of shooting practice. Thank you, Mr. Wilkerson.

Thought for the future:
When shit hits the fan and the country/world falls apart anarchy will rule. You'd better have your own weapons and know how to use them or be very, very good friends with those who do.
My reality and yours are quite different.

I think both are a good idea
