Which Tea Party, and what do they really want?

NPR just had an interview with a leader of the "Tea Party Patriots". She bad-mouthed the "Tea Party Express" in no uncertain terms (kind of like the Life of Brian scene where they badmouth the different Judean factions). She then went on about cutting Social Security and Medicare, but when pressed she admitted she is on both and opposes cutting it for people of her age.

The Tea Party looks like a circus of clowns to me.

Hmmm. Who anointed her a "leader?" Considering that the "tea party" is a loose conglomeration of a sector of the public apparently without any formality, how is this leadership established?

I would imagine that "leaders" would be those who are loud mouths and otherwise kooky enough to garner attention. The millions who voted for "tea party" candidates include some nuts who are, by no means, reflective of all of them or even most of them.

Interesting, since the "Tea Party" doesn't even have a tent. Find a clown who self-identifies as a "Tea Party Patriots" leader and say, "That's a Tea PArty Patriots leader" and conclude that they are all clowns. This doesn't make sense.

I happen to agree with her. I think that Medicare and Social Security should be grandfathered. These people were made promises, had their income seized, and told it would be made available to them later on. It would be outright theft compounded to take it from them after they already gave it.

SO people on it now get it. I would increase the age requirement a year every five years. I would also freeze benefits paid under it and provide limited COLA adjustments that decrease for each new grandfathered class.

Perhaps you consider me a clown for actually understanding the natural and probable effect of simply eliminating both. If so, why is it such a clowning thought that something like this must be weaned over time?

We're cleaning up the messes made in the 1930's and 60's with Social Security and Medicare. No, don't take the people who were conditioned to rely on it off of it. But start weaning people now.
