Integration vs. Multi-Culturalism

Recommended Posts

It's only racist when it is coupled with intolerance of other races. Overall integration is a good thing. We're stronger because different cultures and races both integrate into US culture and also retain their own identity.

So it is good as long as the host country changes it's culture to accomodate the newcomers.

Yes, as we've done. (And as you've admitted you've done.)

"For also in the 1840s, pomme frites ("fried potatoes") first appeared in Paris. Sadly, we don't know the name of the ingenious chef who first sliced the potato into long slender pieces and fried them. But they were immediately popular, and were sold on the streets of Paris by push-cart vendors. . . .The origin of the name is thus the country of origin French and not the cooking term french."

Yep. Another (small) example of how our culture has changed to adapt to outside influences. French fries are one of the staples of the US diet now. That's what we call "integration" - the commonizing of cultures within a country.

I think that there is two separate sections to this and
two different levels of value.

Martin Luther King was clearly in favor of integration.
The areas of interest were educational opportunities
and employment opportunities.

I don't think he was going to demand that black Americans give up jazz and blues for the music of white America. Those are part of the culture of black Americans.

Cultural impacts were of less importance to him.
He wore a suit and tie and spoke English.
(Of course, he was born in the US, so there was no
cultural conflict of food or dress styles).

Americans do not shy away from eating a sandwich
because it was an English food style.

If multi-culturalism is wrongly defined as total non-integration and separate sub-culture, then it is a disservice to the immigrant.

The main value of a host country to an immigrant is
the educational and employment opportunities.
These are important to adult existence.

Cultural styles, such as food, dress, and music are
far off secondary values.

If we are discussing "French fries" as a defining concept of French cooking, then it is either an insult to
French culture, or a transparent trolling attempt to re-direct discussion. Regardless, of low value.

If all multi-culturalism contributes to society
is a different hair, music, food, or clothing style,
it shouldn't be discussed on a national govt level. Only on the mid-section of Seventeen magazine.

Integration has a great deal more importance to the
individual because it will determine the ability of the
individual to function as an adult in the host society.

>we should never adapt that which makes us unique as Americans !

What makes us unique as Americans is that we DO adapt. We're a melting pot; what defines us is the combination of cultures from all the immigrants who make up the USA. Again, that's called "integration" and is one of our great strengths as a country.

Imagine how much poorer we'd be culturally if we rejected the French influence in New Orleans, or the British invasion of rock and roll in the 60's, or the Irish pubs, folklore and music that came with the Irish during the potato famine immigration wave. Imagine what our domestic beer industry would be like if we refused to accept a style of beer discovered in Budweis, Czechoslovakia in the 1870's. (OK, maybe that's a bad example.)

Does drinking Budweiser, eating hamburgers and listening to rock and roll make us less American? I'd say it has become almost the definition of American - which is why that cultural integration is so important to us.

you are correct. However, I would submit to you that it is our adaptation that makes us Americans.

Take the best of what immigrants bring with them. Make it part of our society.
