happythoughts 0 #52 October 18, 2010 Quote Quote >Influence is COMPLETELY different than integration. Cultures influence each other all the time. When an aspect of another's culture is incorporated into one's own culture, that aspect is said to be integrated into one's culture. (And vice versa, of course.) going back a bit, since this thread has morphed a bit. It wasn't originally about food. No serious discussion about helping adults ever is. Adult immigrants who come to this country want the dream of the "Land of Opportunity". They aren't coming here so that they can eat more types of sandwiches. The opportunities are education and job opportunities. There are proven paths to acquiring both. To accelerate the educational process, they must have language skills. The ELL programs exist because educators realize that they are essential. The education is the stepping stone forward to better job opportunities. To suggest that immigrants wish to come to this country with a goal of staying at the bottom of the economic ladder (and want this for their families) is absurd. They aren't coming here so that their grandchildren can mop floors and drink new flavors of beer.

pirana 0 #55 October 19, 2010 Quote"For also in the 1840s, pomme frites ("fried potatoes") first appeared in Paris. Sadly, we don't know the name of the ingenious chef who first sliced the potato into long slender pieces and fried them. But they were immediately popular, and were sold on the streets of Paris by push-cart vendors. . . .The origin of the name is thus the country of origin French and not the cooking term french." OH! OH! OH! Can we do spaghetti next!?!?" . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Throttlebender 0 #58 October 19, 2010 Ummmm, I believe in many parts of Jimmy Joe Bob Land, those are still being called Freedom Fries or some such crap in defiance of any integration with those pussy Jerry Lewis fans.
