This video was ACTUALLY made by the bad guys. The cameraman is filming his friend as he praises Allah and launches mortar shots at American troops. Little does he know that new mortar shell tracking technology can track the trajectory of a hostile round and fire a retaliatory shot to precisely the spot from which the hostile shell was fired. This only requires the hostile mortar to fire 2 to 3 rounds.

Count the number of mortar rounds the masked insurgent fires in the video. See how well it works. If you listen carefully you can hear the single round from the American artillery fired in the distance. It comes just after the terrorist fires his third round - and his fourth round drops down the tube but that's as far as it gets.

If it's a repost I hadn't seen it

That looks more like the round blew the tube up and not a round being dropped on top. I cannot see an artillery team being able to get a track from the round that quick, get a tube aimed and hit them in that amount of time. As for the sound in the background that you said is an American round being launched, that is probably the impact from one one the rounds he sent. I say the round malfunctioned and blew the tube up.

Computers do some purty amazin things... from the moment he let the first shot out of the tube ... a computer tracked it ...did the necessary trangle-guessing ... second shot the computers narrows it down even more third shot and a present is on its way.

I agree that we're capable of retuning fire by artillery in two shakes. Hell, we're deploying systems to identify and shoot down mortars. USN ships have computer controlled weapons to shoot down missiles. I also heard they are deploying a system similar to ShotSpotter to find point of origin for snipers, mortars, and other attacks.

Nothing better than blasting the bastard trying to blast you before he even finishes trying. However, I don't think that's what happened here for two reasons. First, the blast from our artillery would have shredded the camera and videot along with the target. Second, my understanding is that three to six shells are genrally used to return fire, not just one.

Fire for Effect ring a bell anyone? I just cannot believe that we could get a round to fire back that fast and that accurate.

They may have had a tube pre-laid for the general area, if they'd attacked from there before.

Well the patriot missle system was designed to shoot down scud missles...its hellafied accurate (I was in a signal corps unit in the army attached to an ADA brigade that used Patriots) and this technology wasnt the newest on the block. Just image what they have their hands on now...

Looking at the frame by frame capture, I believe you're right.

Other people on other blogs talking about the same video... frame by frame... see an inbound round

If you look at the first frame of the capture, you can see an angled jet of flame - I'm going to use Occam's Razor and say it was a sympathetic detonation rather than a "Golden BB' counterbattery round going down the mortar tube.

Fairly small explosion (compared to a real artillery round), timed just after he drops a round down the tube and located perfectly at the tube.

Bad mortar round.

Counter Mortar Radar has been around for a while (not exactly sure how long, but they had it in Viet Nam).
2 plots off of one round in the air gives them a location for the tube. If they are on their game, they know where it came from before the first round hits.

But even with a tube already loaded and aimed in the general direction, it would take more than 30 seconds to line it up, fire it, and for the round to transit.

And for the first shot to land exactly on the bad guy's mortar tube is pretty prepostorus.

It's still a cool video. And since we are here in SC, maybe it's an indicator that God has a sense of humor. These dudes were saying "Allah Akhbar" before each round. They probably said a quick prayer before starting, perhaps a prayer asking God to remove the horrible people who are ruining the country.

Well, he did:)
