With Tagline, MSNBC Embraces a Political Identity

Quote

MSNBC, once the also-ran but now the No. 2 cable news channel, has a new tagline that embraces its progressive political identity.
The tagline, “Lean Forward,” will be publicly announced Tuesday, opening a planned two-year advertising campaign intended to raise awareness of the channel among viewers, advertisers and distributors.
The tagline “defines us and defines our competition,” said Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC, his implication being that the Fox News Channel, which is No. 1 in cable news and a home for conservatives, is leaning backward. Fox’s best-known tagline is “Fair and Balanced.”
Some of the new MSNBC ads include shots of President Obama on his election night; others, directed by the filmmaker Spike Lee, showcase hosts like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow preparing for their nightly programs; and still others feature quotes like “the future belongs to the fearless.”
snip

MSNBC knows it leans liberal and progrssive, and to hell with admitting it, they are advertising it. The question is whether folks of a similar political bent who denied bias in the past will come to terms with this.

What's the big deal? you have Fox on one side and MSNBC on the other. Who has ever denied that they have a left slant.

Claiming you are "fair and balanced" is a fucking joke.

So what you're saying is;
"The Left" is now "Forward."

Seems to make sense since we've always considered "The Right" to be "Backward."

I'm thinking more like the left being "Biased and Unbalanced"

I happen to like/dislike certain programs from both networks. I have wondered why Fox is still #1 even when a majority elected democrat potus/house/senate has been in power. A friend of mine has a theory that most conservatives watch Fox to stay engaged and informed. Most liberals watch Dancing w/ Stars, Tosh.O, and MTV..

Hold off on the "you" there, skippy. Or have you been too busy throwing around labels and pigeon-holing anyone you disagree with to notice that I make fun of FOXNews as much as I do MSNBC? Or that I point out hypocrasy and factual errors by both?

And there are lots of folks, even several here, who disagreed with the assessment of MSNBC as left leaning on the US left-right scale. Certainly more than the "many" who want to shoot all illegal border crossers on sight (a grand total of one).

Ha ha, funny one liner. :P But really, would you argue that left wingers and liberals like to call themselves progressive?

Do you not think they're left? They would disagree with you, as would the NY Times.

MSNBC’s brand was unclear for its first full decade. A creation of NBC News and Microsoft in 1996, the channel bounced from one programming idea to another before Mr. Olbermann, the host of “Countdown,” and Chris Matthews, the host of “Hardball,” seized on antiwar, anti-Republican sentiments in the latter part of the Bush administration.

The channel identified itself as “The Place for Politics” — a catchphrase that it will continue to use alongside “Lean Forward” — and added liberal hosts like Ms. Maddow and Ed Schultz, and a lively morning show, “Morning Joe.”

1) FOX turned news reporting into a train wreck (they're the "lupus of news",). People love the carnage so they tune in and it sells.

2) MSNBC (and all the other networks) want to make money so they stoop to FOX's level of journalistic integrity and try to make a buck. They're looking for a profitable niche.

3) This is what you get with market based news journalism. If PBS were to hire really hot news reporters, dress them in beach wear, lock them up in a studio together for months on end, have them shoot guns, crash cars and wrestle in jello while reporting the day's stories, their ratings would go through the roof.

4) I think FOX and MSNBC suck so I dont' watch either. The "new media" just make people stupid. It's not about providing good information. It's about making money.

Is that what they think they're doing?

The fact (?) that MSNBC is now #2 is pretty telling - it's just as crappy at keeping people informed. Personally, I don't care if they feel engaged. Do they need a gold star with sprinkles?

Ah, but change you can believe in is. ;)

Not nearly as much as change of Majority power in the House and Senate.

So you really think MAJORITY power is going to change in both the House AND Senate?

Seems wildly optimistic.

No - it is change you can believe in.

Didn't say it was change that would happen.

More like change that MUST happen if we are goijng to stop this outpouring of money we don't have.

Unless we the people keep talking to them often (after the elections), I have to say I agree with you here. I am afraid the only change will be the priorities and programs, while the check book will still be wide open

Cant shoot em (can we?)

We do not have many options unless it is close to and election date and we can scare them in to doing some of the things we want them too

>More like change that MUST happen if we are goijng to stop this

Change, you say? What kind of change? Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN):

===============
Well, ending bailouts and cutting spending in Washington, D.C. is a new idea, David! And the truth is, look, Republicans didn’t lose our majority in 2006, we lost our way. We walked away from the principles of fiscal discipline and reform that minted our governing majority back in 1980 and again in 1994. And the american people walked away from us. What we have in this proposal is not necessarily new — the idea of fiscal responsibility, pro growth policies, openness and transparency in government are solid american ideas.
===============

So let's see:

The GOP "walked away" from "fiscal discipline." And now they have something that's . . . not new. So it's sort of unchange.

But what sort of "fiscal responsibility" are they talking about above? Well, we've mostly heard about tax cuts in association with that, which is strange, because tax cuts without spending cuts is the definition of irresponsibility.

So there have to be spending cuts. What, specifically, will they cut? During an interview Rep. Kevin McCarthy lists the specifics:

=================
GUTHRIE: Everybody likes to cut spending, but the issue is where, how? What specifically are you going to cut?

MCCARTHY: What are you going to cut? Discretionary spending. Anything that’s not security...

TODD: Well, hang on. What is discretionary? Give us two or three items that are discretionary.

MCCARTHY: You could go through every different program within government, outside of entitlements, outside of national defense, that is discretionary spending that Congress has control of. That has gone over 88 percent in the last two years.

GUTHRIE; So what comes to mind for that, if you could wave a magic wand and do it unilaterally, what would you cut?

TODD: If you had the line item.

MCCARTHY: The line item would be across-the-board.
=================

So there you have it. There will be some sort of specific general cuts across the board in discretionary spending. With a line item. But no entitlement, defense or security cuts. Well, with a plan like that, how can you lose?

The GOP will not get control of either the House or Senate this election cycle in part because their only real plan seems to be to cut taxes and dramatically expand the deficit. And that's the last thing we need.

There are a lot of voters who really only care about the red part.

Which means, even less fortunately, that some representatives will only care about the red part, and we'll end up with too many underfunded programs, rather than fewer programs as a whole.

Realistically there are only three programs that can be cut and make a difference: Medicare, Social Security and Defense. Each of them has such a strong constituency that makes it politically impossible to cut them. All else is peanuts by comparison.

Neither "tax and spend" nor "cut taxes borrow and spend" appeal to me. But the real problem isn't taxes or spending, it's creating money out of thin air. Nowadays, they don't raise taxes much and they don't borrow much. They just spend things and figure they'll account for it later (and never do).

The worst kind of taxes are the ones you don't pay. I don't mean dodging the IRS, I'm talking about government stealing the value of your dollar without ever admitting to it. Sure, you still make X thousand dollars a year, but we're going to create electronic dollars out of thin air and cut the spending power of your dollars in half. But we cut taxes and funded your special interests.
