Do Guns Cause Suicide? No - Altitude Does!

News:
Higher Altitude May Be Risk Factor for Suicide

The altitude at which a person resides is an independent predictor of the risk of suicide, according to research published in The American Journal of Psychiatry.

Namkug Kim, Ph.D., of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the relationship between altitude and suicide rates, including gun- and non-gun-related suicide rates...

The researchers found a significant positive correlation between mean altitude of the county of residence and suicide rate. This correlation was present for both suicide involving guns as well as non-gun-related suicides. The researchers concluded that this association could be related to metabolic stress associated with mild hypoxia at higher altitudes in individuals with pre-existing mood disorders...

"When altitude, gun ownership, and population density were considered as predictor variables for suicide rates on a state basis, altitude appeared to be a significant risk factor."

Altitude was a more significant factor than guns!

So maybe this is why skydivers are so crazy...

They didn't say that. They even say "Data on gun ownership were not available on a county basis." They just state that increased altitude of residence (by county) increase both gun-related suicides and other suicides.

Right. So altitude is a bigger factor in suicide than guns, since it even increases non-gun suicides. And you can't blame lack of gun data on non-gun suicides, since they're not even a factor in that category.

They DID imply that they had gun data at the state level, and the same correlation existed there. States with higher elevations, like Colorado, must have a higher suicide rate than states with low elevation, like Florida.

Sounds to me like, the high altitude is the cause of the deep depression which leads folks to end their lives. When someone gets 'serious' about killing themselves, if a gun is handy, that's what they'll use. Men tend to use guns, women tend to use booze and pills to end it all. This whole report seems lacking and just trying to get the anti-gunners all worked-up. If, someone wants to kill themselves, they'll just do it.

Mine is just fine, but thank you for being concerned about it. And also for providing so much of that humor which you allege I don't have, with the the posts in which you try to make serious responses. I'm grateful for your contribution to my humorous well-being.

An ellipsis (a series of dots indicating an omission of words or change of topic) consists of just three dots, not five. There should also be no space to the left of the ellipsis. And it seems to be improperly used here, as there is no obvious omission of words which could be presumed to follow, nor any logical follow-up change of topic - a simple period would have been correct. Furthermore, my name is not "Dude".

You see, that argument you're making that it's okay for you to criticize Americans for their English, while being immune from similar treatment yourself because you're German, doesn't wash. If you choose to play that game with others, it's fair game for others to play it back at you. Are you sure you wish to continue?

Crazy is a prerequisite to skydiving. Not to worry though, soon Obama will have us all at sea level where we can be more easily observed and controlled.

Unless...The Last Best Hope - Us!

For the above non-informed, please note the correct use of the ellipsis. There is another correct use which I will leave to your research. ;)

I would agree that altitude causes suicides.
I mean, people who live on the 57th floor are more likely to splat than those on the 1st floor right? Except for Superman and Chuck Norris, that is.
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

19 religion of peace suicide mission hijackers caused some twin tower occupants to attempt to overcome their altitude problems with a non base rig suicide gamble !

Men tend to succeed far more often in their attempts. Maybe they are more serious or maybe more competent, I don't know.

A slug to the temple will definately, do the job. I knew of a man who got severely drunk and decided to end it all. He used a .22-cal. Ruger semi-auto pistol. When EMT arrived, they saw 5 bloody streaks up the side of the guy's head. He seemed to have held the pistol at a 'bad' angle. All the bullets grazed his skull.
I never heard of any further attempts on his part.

................................................................

Montana has the highest suicide rate in the nation. Alaska had the highest a few years back. Isolation and alcoholism, are factors. I don't think altitude has much to do with it.

Women have greater problems with depression than men, but men are far more successful at killing themselves than women.

One reason is that men use more lethal means. One of the first things I ask someone who is contemplating suicide, is how do you plan to kill yourself. If they plan to shoot themselves the risk level may be extremely high. There is no going back after touching the trigger. In other forms of suicide a person may have a chance to change their mind.

Most people who attempt suicide don't really want to die that way. They are tired of hurting and suicide is a way out. If you take pills their is time to get help before it's too late. If you try to gas yourself there may be time to change your mind and crawl out of the garage. With a gun it is over fast.

Some people fail by not shooting themselves in the right place. Some flinch at the last second. Using too small of a gun might not work either....

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that guns are lethal. In the hands of a suicidal person the chance of death is much greater than if they are contemplating most other means.

They did a study once of people who jumped to their death off a bridge. Most of all of them died after jumping, but some survived. They interviewed these survivors and asked them what was going through your mind as you were falling to your death. Nearly every one of them said, I wished I hadn't jumped. After they took that step their was no going back.

At any rate, suicide is preventable in most cases. The more lethal the means the greater the danger. There are some who are going to kill themselves no matter what, but most can be helped....
