Happy Constitution Day! A quote from a founding father.

Recommended Posts

And I will borrow a quote from Samuel Adams:
"How strangely will the Tools of a Tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of Words!"

Oops, I quoted a founding father again, I must want to own slaves!:S

Yes, some things in the constitution are evolving, like understanding that all men have unalienable rights, and by all men that means all men regardless of color.

Just because there was slavery 200 years ago doesn't mean that we should throw out the line "all men are created equal, and are endowed by our creator certain unalienable rights."

These are the ideas we should be defending. And shame on you for suggesting I want to own slaves.

What pisses me off is when you can find quotes from half of our founding fathers like this one....

"The Constitution shall never be construed... to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms."
Samuel Adams

.... and politicians want to ban guns. I know exactly what the constitution says and I know exactly what the founding fathers meant.

"There is an art, it says, or, rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss."

UH I asked you how many slaves you wanted.. because YOU were trotting out the sanctity of the Constitution as written.

I know its difficult for you to see WHY I might have asked that... but I was trying to point out.. that as written it had a few SERIOUS flaws... and that at the time the BOLDED line CERTAINLY only meant free white men...

just sayin

And now we have evolved enough to understand that black men are men too. The idea has evolved not gone away.

When I talk about the sanctity of the constitution I am talking about the idea. Refer to the founding fathers ideas before making changes. Yes somethings need changing, but lets not completely throw out the ideas. Some of these ideas have made America what it is.

The idea is a government elected by the people. Because we now have a means to quickly tally the votes, do we really need an electoral college? Stuff like that.

like so many of your fellow travellers wish to throw out things like the 1st and the 4th.....

You mean like Obama keeping Patriot, or trying to shut out Fox News? How about threatening to cut off insurance companies that tell the truth to their clients about Obamacare increasing their costs and hence premiums?

Nice try, though.

Part of the historical background was a world:
- without the web or mass communications
- where a gun was expensive, a family would most likely only have one
- where most families were rural, so a gun was a tool rather than a potential tool mostly used for entertainment
- where a large proportion of people couldn't read; not that it mattered -- there wasn't much to read
- where white males were the only real "people"

That's the context. My tendency is to say that part of taking the Constitution with its historical context is to consider whether different decisions would have been made had their world been different. We have the ability to amend it, but by putting too many specific meanings into the Constitution, we try to make it fit within time-constrained boundaries. I'd rather make the laws time-constrained, and keep the Constitution something that is the framework.

Really? I'd venture to say that you don't know exactly what the Constitution says, considering you just quoted a passage from the Declaration of Independence.
