Stem cell funding to begin/resume after your hero ended it. Nice job, neo-cons.

I'll reply, just so we can get some TRUE info in the discussion.

Which law is it that got overturned?

Do you mean the EXISTING LAW preventing Federal funding that was signed by YOUR hero, Clinton?

Perhaps the exception that created the existing Federal funding on stem cells signed by Bush in 2001?

Oh, wait...you mean the attempted EXPANSION of Federal funding that Bush vetoed.

NONE of which prevent private funding.

:D:D:D:D

embryonic stem cell research Lucky.

Adult stem cell work has proven very promising and has infact been shown effective

Embryonic has been shown to be very dangerous
however. Embryonic has been shown to be very volatile. The cells tend to turn rogue and create abnormal growths

Adult stem cells have been shown to be very stable and are showing more promise daily

So you post (not your link) was misleading at best

it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Adult stem cells are not pluripotent. There are several applications they cannot be used for as a result.

Uh, no. You may have seen some odd science fiction show claiming such a thing, but there are no risks from "rouge embryonic cells" that are significantly different from the risks of using adult stem cells.

But I do like the image. Rouge embryonic stem cells causing abnormal growths! Sounds scary.

Yeah! Fuck the laws that congress passed! We don't need no stinking laws! We should all just do whatever Lucky feels is right at any given moment![/sarcasm]

And before you go off on another rant about neo cons and fascist and whatever other
nasty names you can come up with, I happen to support stem cell research. The reason you won't like my position is that I don't think laws should be thrown aside just because someone doesn't like them. Use the legal process. It's there for a reason.

Right. That's why the issue is over RESEARCH not USE.

>the reason libs love pushing the embryonic agenda is the cover to give
>abortion legitimacy !

The reason I think it's important is that it may someday cure things like spinal cord injury and Alzheimer's. I think that's a better use of a discarded human embryo than burning it.

But if you'd rather burn human embryos than help paraplegics walk again to support a political position, well, sorry - your politics just aren't that important. (And fortunately most other people, including this judge, agree.)

I particularly like how he focused on the fact that the judge is sitting in Texas. It's not a Texas court. It's federal. He also just happened to leave out the fact that the three appellate judges who disagreed with the lower court were all appointed by the Bush presidents.

Damn, Lucky, don't you just hate it when facts get in the way of a good propaganda rant?

No, the judge's view counts. I just happen to agree with him.

So you're in with Lucky - no problem breaking the law, so long as the person doing it agrees with your viewpoint?

Aside from your rhetoric, we agree, you just can't help but to act like an *******. If this matter were flipped, you'd be calling this an activist judge, but since it's a good ole boy judge you'll just cautiously disagree.

We're on the same page, it's pathetic to run the country from the bible, goo is not a person and this is early stage goo. WHat your president did 9 years ago was outright pathetic, I think you agree.

2001? When he ALLOWED stem cell funding, partially reversing Clinton's ban on federal funding?

Damn, Lucky...and here we thought you were FOR stem-cell research...

Nope. No problem _enforcing_ the law. In this case it happens to agree with my opinions on the subject, since it will save lives and improve people's lives.

Bill, do you disagree with Mike's charaterization of what Clinton and GWBush signed concerning stem cell research? If you don't, I don't see how this last post from you makes sense.

your faith in the unfulfilled promise of embryonics borders on fanatical religion . yet you have no fairh that proven treatments with adult stem cells are more likely to provide treatments for these other conditions is puzzling . when all is not as seems agendas are revealed . loosely quoting sinclair lewis !

It is scary

The very reason embryonic cells are far more risky is because they are pluripotent! They are far more agressive because of this very fact
I will see if I can find the interview with the research scientist who went over this

And yes, there are some things that adult cells will not be able to do but, as of yet there have not been any effective treatments from embryonic cells (that I have heard of)

This is back from 05. And yes know the articles main point was to call for fresh colonies of cells

?? I have no 'faith' in them. They look promising.

What are you talking about? Adult stem cells ARE used for treatment. That's great.

>The very reason embryonic cells are far more risky is because they are
>pluripotent!

Well, the reason stem cell treatment works AT ALL is that the cells are pluripotent; they can become neurons, or skin cells, or Islets of Langerhans.

There are two ways to get these pluripotent cells:

1) Use embryonic cells; they are pluripotent by nature.

2) Use adult cells and turn them into induced pluripotent stem cells. This requires genetically modifying them with chemicals to restore their pluripotency. The genetic modification often results in cancerous cell formation.

For purposes where you need pluripotent cells, embryonic cells are a lot less susceptible to forming tumors. There are other benefits to both, of course; autologous grafts with IPS cells are far less likely to be rejected, for example.

>And yes, there are some things that adult cells will not be able to do but, as
>of yet there have not been any effective treatments from embryonic cells
>(that I have heard of)

There is currently a trial going on for spinal cord injury repair with embryonic stem cells. Whether or not it is effective will remain to be seen. But I go agree that a lot more work needs to be done.
