evangelistic atheism

Apparently, atheists are becoming more assertive.

Quote

IS ATHEISM ON
THE MARCH? 3-9
Some of the world’s leading atheists
are on a mission: They want to convert
you to their way of thinking. But is their
reasoning sound?

Interesting. No one dislikes evangelists worse than evangelists. People converting others to their way of thinking? How rude.

Quote

Religion has aided the cause of the new atheists, as people have become fed up with the religious extremism, terrorism, and conflict plaguing the world. “Religion poisons everything,” says one leading atheist.

Well... the criticisms of atheists do seem to be valid...

Quote

Core dogmas, say the new atheists, must be
exposed, abandoned, and replaced by rationality and reason. People must be unafraid to speak frankly about the “mountains of life-destroying gibberish” found in the Bible and the Koran, writes atheist Sam Harris.

Gibberish. Good word.

So, who is the most upset about these outspoken critics who are actively promoting their cause?

The Jehovah Witnesses. :D:D
I can't wait until the atheists knock on their door at 8am on Saturday.
:D

Like this was anything new. It is amusing to watch atheists peddle their bag of rocks like they were the jewels of the universe. I guess they are trying to save the world from the "intellectual hell" of God consciousness. Knock yourselves out, you will never succeed.

They are succeeding, if you count number of atheists in the US as a measure of success. They are increasing (2 million in 2001 to 3.6 million in 2008.) The bigotry against them is also increasing; it will be interesting to see how that falls out.

It probably will not succeed in our lifetime, but when you look at how much progress has been made in the last hundred years of ridding people of their superstitions, the time will come.

Well... there was worshipers of Baal, the Roman gods, the Greek gods, the Norse gods, the Druid gods, animism (many forms)... the list of past religions seems endless. They are on the short list for believers these days.

Of course, people in a current religion will call all those "mythologies" because they seem so absurd.
All those silly gods living on Mt Olympus or flying around on clouds.

We can readily laugh at those because they are not the "true religion". They don't have the "divinely inspired book" and prophets.

I just have the same criticisms for the current fictions as I do for the old ones.

All of it has become tiresome. People are tired of being polite as those with The Truth tell us in their most arrogant way, "We will pray for you".

Non-religious people are now saying, "We hope you have therapy".

It's tough to be open about being an atheist, and I'm happy that people like Richard Dawkins and Julia Sweeney make atheism less scary. I still can't tell my 83 year old grandfather that I will not be attending church on Sundays because I do not believe in god. The bitch inside me wants to scream "There is no god!" when he nags for me to go to church. I'm a pansy, so I just say, "No, thanks," and keep the peace.

Outside of my family, as long as people keep their religion to themselves, I will keep the lack of mine to myself. I don't come across many people from organized religions trying to push their beliefs on me...I get it more from the "new age" movement that try to bastardize science and use it as their beliefs.

All that being said, as long as there are assholes like Ted Haggard, a few loud mouths from the other side doesn't seem like such a bad thing.
There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

Numbers will ebb and flow, that is nothing new. Look at one of the first significant illustrations in the Bible.
Lucifer tells the woman, who is God that we should be mindful of Him. Take the knowledge of good and evil and you will become god. The wisdom tales of man wanting to become god have been recounted many times through out cultures and history with the same outcome. Man looses.

Usually because god comes down and smacks them about for daring to be a bit uppity. Which is why it's such a great line for the religious establishment - do what we tell you and don't ask questions or the G-man is gonna get pissed.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

The higher your IQ the more likely you are to exhibit social values and religious and political preferences that are novel to the human species in evolutionary history. Specifically, liberalism and atheism, and for men, preference for sexual exclusivity correlate with higher intelligence, a new study Social Psychology Quarterly finds. The study advances a new theory to explain why people form particular preferences and values. The theory suggests that more intelligent people are more likely than less intelligent people to adopt evolutionarily novel preferences and values, but intelligence does not correlate with preferences and values that are old enough to have been shaped by evolution over millions of years." read more

Mostly the hell of the followers of the god du jour.

My neighbor had a 4 yo kid who would describe to me
his newest super-hero that he made up. It was the most
interesting thing in the world to him.

After the first 2 minutes, it becomes supremely boring to
adults to listen to a 4 yo babble about their omnipotent servant.
"He would fly down and chase away the Smith's dog if I summoned him."

That amount of patience is reserved for children.
The geni never was.

I know. That's obvious.

That is why no intelligent person thinks that lightning is cause by angry gods. Or rain can be summoned by dancing. Or hopping around a Pentecostal church with snakes is a great idea. The mystical stream nymphs of the Druids are myth. That all sounds ridiculously stupid, doesn't it ?

It's not just a few religious systems that are false,
people realize they are the same.

Atheists, being a moderate proportion of the USA population (about 8-16%) are disproportionately less numerous in the prison population (0.21%)

Japan (the most atheistic nation in the G-8) has the lowest murder rate while the United States (the most Christian nation in the G-8) has the highest. Japan used to have much stronger religious faith, and a state religion, and guess what: Japan was remarkably aggressive and militaristic when "Shinto" was at its peak, and during WW2, when its Emperor was regarded as a God.

Louisiana, with America's highest church attendance rate, has twice the national average murder rate.

If atheism causes violence, why are right-wing fundamentalists unable to find a shred of statistical evidence to back that claim up?

For family events, it becomes pointless aggravation.
They spend the rest of your weekend convincing you. They have "special knowledge" and are here to help you. :S
