13 people on board, but it looks like they're all accounted for alive with one injury.

Ah, that's good news. Everyone's (apparently) safe and sounds like we won't have another gusher...

In that case, the best-case scenario is that the explosion was due to some mechanical failure on the platform (i.e. a leaking propane tank.) A somewhat worse case would be a non-producing (but still oil-bearing) well that started leaking oil and gas - and the gas caused the explosion.

I think it would be worse to find out that it was intentional in some way.

Obama was heard saying, "I want somebodies ASS!"

He is expected to extend the Moratorium on oil drilling for another 6 months until he has time to get to the bottom of it. This will take place after his extended vaction to Europe which is currently being planned.:P

Or the media is just getting mixed info - not atypical of the on-the-fly reporting/updating that comes with the 24-hour news cycle. The article you linked says "The platform is a fixed petroleum platform that was in production at the time of the fire. " (emphasis added by me).

Not currently producing? I read it as being in production.

"The platform is a fixed petroleum platform that was in production at the time of the fire, according to a homeland security operational update obtained by The Associated Press.

The update said the platform was producing about 58,800 gallons of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas per day. The platform can store 4,200 gallons of oil."

And this sounds like they won't have the money to clean up their mess or pay reparations.

" Mariner Energy focuses on oil and gas exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico. In April, Apache Corp., another independent petroleum company, announced plans to buy Mariner in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $3.9 billion, including the assumption of about $1.2 billion of Mariner's debt. That deal is pending."

My bet is that no head will roll. After BPs massive fuck up, everything else will seem routine and hardly worth noticeing.>:(

Wow, more than half a dozen posts before someone got around to blaming Obama. You guys are slacking.

Sorry - we know it only takes y'all 3 posts to blame everything on Bush or the Republicans, but we're just not as good as y'all are at the blame game.

Is this math screwy, or do the platforms always have tankers to offload to?

I'm still trying to figure out what explosion means here - was this a major incident, or a small fire? When the media gets fixated on a subject (like dog bites), every event gets national coverage. When it's not in the limelight, it's on page 23 for 2 paragraphs.

According to an NPR report, this is a production platform not a drilling platform. I'm guessing (hoping) that they turn the spicet on when a tanker comes along side and close it when there's not one available. But I'm guessing (hoping). I still haven't heard any definate word about a continuing leak. Let's all hope fot the best.

And Bill, that didn't look like a "blame Obama" comment to me. If I was in Obamas position, I would want some ones head on a stick.
