happythoughts 0 #1 September 2, 2010 Origin dates of the most popular (existing) religions The site has an interesting chart. It has the disclaimer for the "major" religions. No, all of them aren't listed. If there were only 400 members, it's not that important. Of course, being in a really popular religion is like claiming to be the least retarded. "It doesn't make any sense, but all agree on it." So, where are the new religions? Some of the old questions are gone now. We understand that Thor really doesn't have anything to do with the sound of thunder, so that won't sell anymore. Nobody whips around on cloud tops. We know what is on cloud tops. There needs to be a new super-power. Some new miracles. I just don't seen any new religions though. Nothing interesting in the last 1,000 or so years. We don't even get updates on the old religions. Shouldn't we be up in the 45-55 commandments range by now? Just add 1 every 100 years. "No car surfing" "No cat juggling"

As has been pointed out, a few of these are somewhat dated, but we keep tabs on them for their traditional value at the very least. Cranking out commandments is not necessarily a good idea. Like any system of law, often the fewer the better. BSBD, Winsor

pirana 0 #6 September 3, 2010 Despite humainity's underperformance in achieving full potential for using sound logic and judgemnent, it is tough to sell a new religion these days. While we as a whole seem very resistant to let go of the old versions of oogie-boogie, we are not so fast to buy into new ones. About the closest thing to it would be Scientology - though some might argue it isn't really a religion - or maybe some of the CT BS - like 911 Truthers and Moon Hoaxers. I think TV might qualify; it seems to play a ridiculously significant role in a lot of people's lives." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Yep, as with prophetic calendars and alternative medical techniques, age enhances credibility. As if the fact that something was made up back when human being knew dick about the world around them makes it more plausible...Do you want to have an ideagasm? "Why?" answer 1 - "Because I have studied moon phases and their relationship to plant growth for years." answer 2 - "Because the goddess Eostre commands it, so start the fertility festival of bunnies and eggs."
