Amazing Grace: Just the Black Notes!

Recommended Posts

Apartheid on a piano is as repugnant as any other. Be it on a piano or in society the best music is played when white and black work together along side each other.
When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy.

I guess that sounds pretty impressive to anybody that doesn't know any better.

While it's true that the pentatonic scale is used in a lot of native African music, it's also used around the entire planet and throughout history. History that predates British slave trade to the US by thousands of years at least back to ancient Greece and probably back at least 6,000 years ago to ancient China.

There is nothing particularly unique about its use in music anywhere.

Did you listen to the end?

Have ever been part of a big church experience?

Has your heart ever been softened?

Is it all just to mushy for you?
Your secrets are the true reflection of who you really are...

While your statement has some truth, it is a fine example of linear thinking.

Oh, I'm well aware of the fact you're simply using this as an excuse to evangelize.

I thought I'd contribute some reality.

OK, go ahead.

I simply posted what I thought was a feel good message.

Did you realize that if you take the notes from each black key and move them exactly one half step up or down, they're white keys? Yep. Amazing Grace can be played just on the white keys too.

But not all songs can be played strictly using a pentatonic scale. The main question I have is this, do all negro spirituals use this scale as the man suggested?

As an absolute? That's ridiculous. Just about any time somebody speaks in absolutes they're wrong. "Most"? Maybe. "All"? Ridiculous.

The message is not about the pentatonic scale. It is about God's grace, human change and racial unification.

If its about racial unification then using only the black keys is a prety strange way to deliver the message. That was the point of my OP. Hence the question about why you thought my thinking was linear.

Why dress it up with the "Amazing Grace" video if you don't want to talk about that?

The speaker actually said we are all united in Christ. That should have been a clue.

My grandparents, parents and grad school professors emphasized a concept known as "reading between the lines" to look for a deeper meaning. It is probably just an American thing.

Well there's you're problem right there! The notes are on the lines and the spaces between them.
