What about the Mormons?

Recommended Posts

I'm really just trying to make a point about tarring everyone with the same brush out of ignorance.

The vast majority of Mormons don't deserve it, and neither do the vast majority of Muslims.

The Mormons haven't lived in peace for 200 years. Read up on the Mountain Meadows massacre and blood atonement.

About 1.2% of the American population are fundamentalists, and the fundamentalist churches believe in polygamy.

Numbers from Wikipedia (fundamentalist Mormonism) and Adherents.com.

I'm not trying to bash the Mormons. The beliefs are weird to me, but much of the lifestyle is heathy and family-friendly. I'm really just trying to show how painting all Muslims with the same brush based on exposure to a few is stupid and narrowminded. 150 years ago people were having conversations about the Mormons that some are having about Muslims now. And there was more violence against the Mormons than they ever perpetrated.

Did the Mormons kill thousands in the name of their god in recent history?

How many Muslims do you actually know? None of the ones I know personally feel that way. But I do know a couple of redneck women who were scared of their husbands.

I would marry him. I would not convert to Islam unless I believed in it, just as I could see marrying a Jew, and as I married an atheist.

If he demanded that I convert to marry him, well, he'd probably be the wrong man for me.

But I've done some looking at Islam; much of it makes plenty of sense. Go all the way and it gets weird, but so do Christianity and Judaism.

If all religions are pretty much weird anyway. If you married a Catholic, would you convert?

The same answer applies. My basic nature currently is that of a liberal Christian; I was raised as an LCA Lutheran, and have been a member of a combined UCC/PC-USA church. We

Now: would I go to services with them? Probably, in all cases, but probably not all the time. But going to services and converting are two different things.

Services, to me, can be a good opportunity to think periodically about what it means to be a good person. To me, there's something worthwhile learning from most ethical/spiritual frameworks.

I was trying to get you to say you would convert to Catholicism and not Islam. So I could get you to admit that Islam would take away your rights as a woman.

Work is getting in the way of my devious mind and dont have them time now to draw you into my trap.

Lets just say we should abolish all religion. Lets just be good to each other and not let some book tell us how to love and who to kill. We can do that on our won.

It won't work...don't you see that religion is the scapegoat for evil men?

"I want this, I want that, God wants me to have it, so it's settled, you're gonna die!"

Hey I am ok with it... as long as I can have all the guys I want and need to keep me happy

Pick and choose away. Everyone else is. Except your a woman so you dont get what you want. You have to give guys what they want. All the religions say so.

Not in mine.

I believe a matriarchal society where polyandry is right and proper leading to a peaceful world as it was before the patriarchies literally fucked it up and had humans at war for the last 6000 years.

The male of H. sapiens, suffering from testosterone poisoning derangement, is incapable of living peacefully with any form of life.

I would be lenient…. You may choose the color of your collar Dom.

No, but the Christians sure did. Google "The Troubles."

the Mormons haven't been around long enough to kill thousands.
However, the Mormons have killed hundreds
This is one example. Google "Danites" for a few interesting (probably mostly inaccurate) reads.

You may be on to something, but you have to let the guys take over for at least a few days every month. The mood swings would really mess with the peace and love going on.

Royal Blue collar with neon yellow highlights please.

It wouldn't, any more than any of the conservative Christian sects would. There are plenty of liberal Muslim women out there. They look just like everyone else. They drive, vote, work, go to school, and some wear the pants in their family.

It's the fundamentalism, not the religion.

Look at Orthodox Judaism and any number of right-wing Christian sects (e.g. the fundamentalist Mormons) for other examples that subjugate women to men.

+1

Not sure if liberal muslim would be the right term though...but maybe.

I consider my self a liberal Christian, but certainly not because I have a liberal theology.

I understood the point you want to make, I think.
However...
Are you considering Mormons as a unique off-shoot of Christianity? Mormons by definition aren't Christian.
Or perhaps you're trying to identify fundamentalist Mormons as fanatical off-shoots of Mormons? Fundamentalists are no more unique from Mormonism as Mormons are from Christianity.
Lutherans, Protestants, Baptists are all off-shoots of Catholicism...

I don't know about all that...the Catholics are the ones that decided to go off in their own direction to a theology that is pratically antithetical to the Bible...
