What words can't you say now?

#1 N-word.

Can't say where?

Here?

I have seen the Mods use the word nigger in posts before.

As long as you are using it in a non specific way, I can't see the problem.

Life in general.

I always found it funny when blacks call each other niggas they laugh about it, but when a white calls a black a nigga, they get all uppity about it.

Geez whiz louise, stop calling yourselves niggas and just maybe, it'll go away. :S

The explanation for that is in the context in which the word is used. When whites say it, it is often said in a manner intended to be hurtful. When blacks say it to each other, it's just a joke between themselves.

Also I think there's some legitimacy to the idea (of course I'm a bachelors of arts and crafts student so take this for what its worth) use of the word among blacks is taking the word back, similiar to gays coining "queer theory" etc. On the flip side the words use by whites brings up the virulent nature of black's history in this country, even if that black person never experienced that level of hardship.

As a white person I think this is a place we as benefactors of white privilege have to just admit we have no way to way to sympathize with the damage that word can cause. I can be called a cracker, honkey, whatever else the parlance happens to be and not be bothered by it because there is no negative history to associate with it. I detest when people try to lay down white guilt or bring up some essentialist theory nonsense, but this is a place it seems white people just have to say "I don't get it, but I see the effect the word has, so I'm going to respect that."

+1, but the typical white male doesn't get that ;ogic, so don't expect a lot of agreement here.

When Jeff Foxworthy does the "You might be a redneck if" jokes, he is speaking to a very white majority crowd. No one take offense at these jokes. If a non white calls someone a redneck it could be taken as a slur, just the same if you call a family member a name, but if a non member of your family called that person the same name you might well take offense.

You can say it. But you'll get a reaction from a lot of people. If you don't want that reaction, don't say it.

I can say that someone is a fucking moron. But if I do it on dz.com, identify who I'm talking about, and it's a dz.commer, then I'll get banned. But I can say it.
