Don't get me wrong, I'd do the exact same thing. But if you have millions and are a champion of high taxes for the rich, you may want to lead by example rather than utilize a loophole that robs the state you represent of money. Maybe, i dunno, enforce the laws you support on yourself?

State law says if a resident purchases property out of state but brings it into Massachusetts within six months, it would be subject to state taxes, the Globe said.

So he's following state law and you have a problem? Many people, Republicans and Dems alike would buy cars in sales tax-free Oregon and figure a way to register it there.

Dems are typically for high taxes and generous loopholes, Repubs for low taxes and generous looholes. Libertarians, if even worth mentioning are for no taxes and few benefits. What a sci-fi movie that would make.

So, you don't have any problems with the rich sheltering their assets so as not to pay taxes, now?

I am for high taxe rates with generous shelters. This kind of tax maneuver, not really a shelter, is unusual as compared to most tax shelters which involve reinvestment. I'm for making the rich keep their money in the game via reinvestment or pay penalties for yanking much of it out in 1 swoop.
Besides, this is a state tax anyway, I'm not that concerned about state taxes, just deferal.

That does not fit with you normal ranting.

So you are OK with the rich not paying taxes as long as they are tricky?????

Yet you are for higher capital gains taxes..... One does not fit with the other.

Like I said, I'd do it too, and I agree- I think it is somewhat hypocritical which is why I posted it.

He says he will pay any taxes that he is subject to, which means if he does nothing and leaves the boat where it is, he doesn't pay anything.

Not sure, but has he stated that people should pay more taxes than they lawfully have to?

I don't beleve in tax cuts in the current economic climate. But that doesn't mean I think people should pay more taxes than what is law.

Not sure how that would be hypocritical?

He is not breaking any tax law. I would do the same thing. Although the move does seem hypocritical
considering his political ways.

Now he is saying he will pay the tax.

Now I know he really is a pussy.:)

And yours should have been the final post in the thread

if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

He's done nothing unlawful. Tax avoidance is not the same thing as tax evasion. If I was a private citizen of MA, I'd do the same thing. I imagine it's not all that uncommon a thing to do in MA.

But I don't blame his constituents for being resentful. He married into a fortune that's worth more than Switzerland. A 500K tax bill isn't even a blip on the radar of his bank account. How much chance does the average working slob in MA get to avoid his taxes? It's not like the citizens of MA haven't helped him make his career. Maybe an extra 500K voluntarily paid into the MA general fund could finance a few jobs or build new computer labs in a few public schools.

And he's not a private citizen, he's a very public figure. Politically, this was really stupid. It should have been an idea that, after his accountant mentioned it to him, he should have said, "Ehh... naahh, it'll look really bad." Instead, he has to backpedal by volunteering to pay the tax; but the public relations damage has been done. Dumb.

I was just thinking that he better not die this year and screw the government out of their estate tax.
People will really be pissed.;)

John (john kerry), 2011 is just about 5 months away. Do your civic duty.:)

I know it must be hard for you when your heroes let you down like that...here's a tissue.

Nah I expect him to do exactly as he has done.

If the boat is kept in another state where it is used it needs to be registered and moored and the dollars paid to that state.

Of course if you would like to pay all the same taxes to the government as you would if you were working in Texas instead of overseas with the tax advantages that brings, please do..... the government needs to pay for all that largesse your hero screwed the American people out of.

You on the other hand have to be SEVERELY BUTT hurt after all those Defender of the Bush with Oak Leaf Clusters draped all over you.

LIBs...Do as I say, not as I do. Hell I would diffently do the same. One thing Kerry does well, is he knows how to save $500,000.

Why would I be butt hurt about Dems showing their normal hypocrisy?

The fact that you had to jump in and try to deflect the conversation to Bush shows just how butt hurt YOU are by it, though.

I was responding to your reporting for duty .. the usual swipe at a man who actually did report.... but you guys do seem to pump up your TNG hero a tad much who could not even show up for a flight physical to keep flying... too bad he never got a chance to go to Nam like millions of other American young people did.

You're really on a trolling-roll with the insults today against people who aren't like you, aren't you? "Libs" in this thread; Californians in the other thread. Who's next?

Hey, I was only being truthful...and like I said, Kerry did the right thing, well initially, it now appears he is going to pay $500,000.00 in taxes he does'nt really owe but fells pressured into doing so.

Now, that is just plan stupid from a tax point of view.

Sounds like you should have voted for him then. You could use a president who knows how to save money.

Well you might have been right, but as I've said earlier it appears he will pay MA. tax on a boat that is docked legally out of State. That in itself says alot.
