90 or 180 on opening...

Recommended Posts

Hey all,
My last few deployments have turned me 90 or 180 degrees, once i was in the saddle. I look up at line stretch and everything looks straight and clean. Lines all straight up, slider evenly spaced, canopy looks fine. But, when my canopy finishes opening, i get turned right away, at least 90 but usually 180 degrees. Can my packing be the cause? The 180 doesnt worry me as much as the 90 which is up or down the line of flight..

Jumping a Sabre2 210 w about 260 jumps on it, WL ~1.0. Just got this canopy used & my rigger did a full check on it & everything was in great shape & within tolerances.

There are only 3 things that will cause a canopy to open off heading.

1) The canopy is not symmetrical. This can happen as it ages, the lines may shrink at different rates. Or, it may have been manufactured that way.

2) The packjob is not symmetrical. This is usually caused by either sloppy packing, or an old method of "rolling the nose". If you insist on rolling the nose, do so in a symmetrical way, by rolling 4 cells one way, then 4 the other, leave the last cell hanging in the middle.

3) The jumper is not symmetrical. There's a few different techniques to keep yourself symmetrical through opening. My wife likes clicking her heels together during the snivel. I like looking at my connector links, and making sure they're even.

Either way, I don't worry too much about 90 degree off heading, but I do get annoyed with 180.

Pretty common on a Sabre2. One end cell will inflate before the other and it turns. I have a Sabre2 150 with around 30 jumps on it that likes to "hunt" on opening. What has helped my openings is this article. I have stopped watching the canopy during inflation and I have fewer offheading openings. If you eliminate all of the input you cause on opening, the hunting that the Sabre2 naturally does will be minimized.

I'm rolling the nose when i pack. I plan on having one of our packers watch me pack nxt weekend to critique me. Also, I'm concentrating on keeping my body as symmetrical as possible during opening so i dont think its me, like it said everything looks nice & straight during the snivel & initial opening. How sensitive is my canopy at THIS stage to body position? Could i be turning with my hips, even if theyre just slightly turned?

I've been having that issue and, stupidly, didnt consider it more than an annoyance. But it seems logical that more inflated cells on one side than the other would cause a turn.

I kept trying to concentrate on body position & careful packing.

yep. Honestly, it's MOST LIKELY that the turn at the end is body position. We're all guilty of asymettry in the harness. Try keeping your feet and knees together from the time you're pulled upright and see how that helps.

As someone else said, why? You do know the manufacturer specifically says NOT to do this on a sabre2, right? ;)

there is usually more to this on sabre2s

in the pack job check to see if you are rolling the TAIL too much

what you will notice is if you do roll it too much you are pulling one set of D lines more than the other and that can cause that asymetrical opening as well

I'm asking the OP why has this question NOT been answered yet?

...because i sleep and go to work :)

I may be rolling the tail too much, thats what i meant. I'm not rolling the nose but i'm definitely grabbing some material in there when i make my tail roll & probably moving stuff around that i shouldnt be. (I will definitely talk with my packer before i jump again, my next time out, & discuss/show what i'm doing)

btw, PD's manual says Roll or dont roll according to your opening preference! It doesnt say dont roll the nose.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will put my feet & knees together & see what effect that has.

And, I have been watching my brake lines to take out twists as i see them, almost every jump.

thanks for all your input...

Ah you're right it says not to "tuck the nose into the center cells."
