quade 4 #4 July 20, 2010 QuoteSo America won't be the #1 boogie man in the world any more, for resource consumption. Damn those chinks! This could eventually mean a couple of things; 1) It gives them more clout than the US when it comes to making deals on energy. Therefore it's likely our energy costs will go up. 2) If they start having trouble getting enough energy, especially if their economy becomes dependent on it like we have, they might not be as hesitant as we are to just take over certain countries. It's actually a world security issue as much as "bragging rights."quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
kelpdiver 2 #5 July 20, 2010 or 3) China's rapid (claimed) growth rate won't be sustainable. Both the US and China have coal to fall back on, so trouble getting energy will mean more coal pollution for all.
SkyDekker 1,465 #6 July 20, 2010 Quote2) If they start having trouble getting enough energy, especially if their economy becomes dependent on it like we have, they might not be as hesitant as we are to just take over certain countries. While the US is fighting about how much control is required in a free market and trying to recover from the disaster of an uncontroled market, China has been buying energy companies. One could easily foresee a future where the Chinese companies just decide to supply China before supplying the US. (Or to supply China at 50% of the cost they supply the US at)

lawrocket 3 #10 July 21, 2010 China is the number one energy user in the world. By deduction it must be the number one producer of energy in the world. As John stated it passed the US in CO2 emissions in 2007. 70% of China's power comes from coal and China is the world's largest producer of coal. Here in the US we have the Centralia Mine - which caught fire and it still burning. In China they have so many mine fires that emissions from their burning mines are estimated to be responsible for up to 3% of global CO2 emissions. Recall that the Kyoto Protocol (which did not receive a single vote for passage in the Senate) excepted China. And India. A big reason for the lack of support in the US. (The other big reason being that the 1990 measurement date was chosen because the USSR fell in 1991 - meaning 1990 was the economic peak of Europe and they needed to do nothing to cut emissions by a third). Tf15 0 #14 July 25, 2010 "Just as the U.S. Senate was abandoning plans for a U.S. cap-and-trade system, this article ran in The China Daily: “BEIJING — The country is set to begin domestic carbon trading programs during its 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015) to help it meet its 2020 carbon intensity target. The decision was made at a closed-door meeting chaired by Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission ... Putting a price on carbon is a crucial step for the country to employ the market to reduce its carbon emissions and genuinely shift to a low-carbon economy, industry analysts said.”; NYT Three times is enemy action
chuteless 1 #15 July 27, 2010 China will no doubt pass the USA in many more things. China isnt fighting a useless war that they cannot win, like the USA. China is seeling everything they make ( good or bad) at you local Walmart Stores across the USA. What is the USA manufacturing and selling throughout China?
