A reasonable inquiry is whether there was an immediate need to subdue Grandma. On the one hand, it does seem - though it's sketchy - that the police were initially called to the home as a medical call, not a "disturbance house" call. In any event, there's Grandma, an obviously elderly woman with an oxygen tank, in bed, brandishing a knife. Was there a risk that she could exit the bed with the knife and present an immediate threat? If not, was there a risk she could throw the knife at someone in the room? Could the police (and the son, who the police have a duty to protect) have reasonably retreated from the room - in enough time - to avoid the threat?
I think a reasonable independent investigator should evaluate whether the police could have retreated from the room, and if so, whether that could have calmed the situation down enough to try to talk Grandma down, or whether that was likely to cause more problems than it defused.
If retreating from the room, in time, was possible, without creating more problems in the process, I think the police should probably have done so. But if there was some immediate need to restrain Grandma-with-a-knife while she was in bed, that might be some justification to taze her.
If I was, say, an independent hearing officer, I'd feel that the article does not give me enough information to make a decision. I'd want the testimony of everyone on the scene; and when the officers testified, I'd ask them to explain whether or not they could have reasonably retreated from the room before tazing her.

QuoteQuoteYOU are the one saying that the taser was an overreaction against a knife.
So it's up to you to tell us what would have been a better course of action by the police.
I think I mentioned USING THEIR BRAINS
Uh-huh, and what if talking to her nicely doesn't make her quit threatening them, or herself?
I suppose if the police just walked away once threatened, and then after departing, the old woman killed herself with the knife, then you would be the first to complain about how the police didn't do enough to help the suicidal old lady?

You assumed wrong. I expect the police to actually protect and serve something other than themselves.

Nope. Your "use brains" answer has already been tried and failed at this point.

Well since you can't seem to figure out what that means shall we say I would not go with the usual cornbred redneck red state solution.... of SHOOT THE FUCKING BITCH.. I guess the fringe rights MILEAGE does vary

Since you don't have an answer other than to throw your usual hate-filled bigoted insults, I'm just going to have to conclude that you really don't have an answer. You had your chance to offer up your wisdom, and failed to do so. And therefore your criticism of the officer's conduct rings hollow, because you don't yourself have any constructive ideas about a better way to handle the situation. You fail.

Is that the best ya got there... since all you seem to be able to do is justify tasing a frail old woman... where the fuck is human dignity in the mix...got any of that???
Like I said... Use the brain....I know that is hard in that part of the country what with the denigration of education and elitists...... but supposedly the fuck sticks who are supposed to be protecting all of the taxpayers.... are supposed to be professional law enforcement. They are SUPPOSED to get the education to be able to talk to little old ladies as a human being.. not a FUCKING TARGET FOR TASERS as you seem to think is appropriate.
Talk about a HUGE fail

Blah blah blah. Repetitious.
I had plenty of sympathy for the old woman. Until she pulled out a big old knife and threatened to kill the police officers. Then my sympathy shifts to the police officers.
Face it - you've got nothing constructive to offer. Talk is not a magic talisman that renders all violent people instantly harmless. All you've got to do is watch a couple of episodes of "Cops" on TV to realize that some people get so worked-up that nothing works on them except handcuffs.
If all the police need is brains to solve every problem, then I wonder why we bother to let them carry guns? Perhaps you would be okay with disarming all the police, to force them to use only their brains to defuse violent situations? And if that means more dead police officers, then so be it?
Please try and respond without spewing hate-filled bigotry.

Please read my post #56, in which I tried to deal with the issues seriously and, I hope, thoughtfully. Consider; discuss.
That is all.

I think you mean post #55. Yes, that was a beautifully thought-out, well-reasoned work of logic. Obviously, it does not belong here.

Quotethey shouldn't have tased her, but shot her. In self-defense. And sue the son for bringing the cops in a death-trap.
I think it's simple - Had the cops just thrown $75,000 at her, I'm pretty sure she would have put down the knife, stopped threatening the cops, stopped threatening suicide, and taken her medication.
All cops should carry $75,000 on them at all times to facilitate talking and brain use.
that or throw a fox at her

Just out of curiousity, what if it was your mom that got tased in that situation? What would your reaction be? And what do you think the cops should have done then?

Why are so many "hung up" on the 911 call? even if "he" was a cronic caller, Does an 80 yearold woman that had nothing to do with it deserve to be Tazed?
It's nothing about deserved to be tazed.
It's the question of wtf can the paramedics do in this circumstance?
Obvious. Whatever the problem, they are better able to handle it than the grandson.
Lesson learned here. When you call 911 for a paramedic you may just get idiot cops instead.
Threatened them with a knife? LOL
I can see it now....
"Come over here to the bed sonny boy so I can cut you."
One idiot cop would be bad... but a fraking room full of them .... wow that force has way more than it's fair share of dick-heads.

My view wouldn't change. I would be grateful that the authorities got her to help without harming her, other than temporary incapacitation from the taser, and without getting themselves hurt from her lethally threatening actions.
These are exactly the kinds of situations for which tasers are designed to benefit everyone - both the cops and the victim. In the old days, granny could have just been shot to death, or a couple of cops could have been stabbed to death trying to be heroes.

Talk about hate filled. I think it takes sheer malice and hatred for your fellow human beings to taser an 87 year old veteran who served her country.
I think you missed your calling.. you would fit great in blue with the POWER you seem to so deeply wish to exercise.
There are more options than just "shooting the bitch" that seems to be the usual response in perineum land that so many of the police are stuck in.
YOU are the one saying that the taser was an overreaction against a knife.
So it's up to you to tell us what would have been a better course of action by the police.
I think I mentioned USING THEIR BRAINS instead of the current trend toward perineumism
