Little Evidence Jesus Died on a Cross, Says Scholar

Long and bloody wars have been fought over far less. Both the French religious wars and the Thirty Years War in Europe were fought by Christians over fairly minor points of theology. Such details are very, very important to some people.

I am trying my best to find records of the Great Holy War between the Crossers and the Big Wooden Xers-I seem to be having trouble locating any. Care to assist? I just don't feel that the traditional geometry of the cross is a linchpin of the religion--but hey, I'm waiting on you to support that position.

The Roman records from that time show Pontius Pilate having many Jews beaten up and executed with the Sanhedrin as their Court Appointed Attorney.

Pity. Public defenders these days are actually quite high-quality and get a bum rap. Now I know where it comes from.

They haven't had that one yet. Both the ones I listed were between The Guy with the Big Hat and the Guys Without the Big Hats.

You don't feel that the cross is the central symbol of Christianity, or that it means a lot to many Christians?

There seemed to be a push in the earlier posts to use the article as a denial of the death and resurrection-which are central. Toss up a poll and I don't think most believers are defending the shape as much as the event. Patriots didn't look much like the shape on the side of the New England helmets either.

How is the "method" of death attacking that?

He was likely Impaled , or may have been an X cross, ot a upper case T or lower case t (as accepted blindly)

What does that discussion have to do with Denial?

Because a lot of the hardcore believers have that reaction to any questions about the accuracy of the Bible. There's a poster on here who has claimed that the Bible is either entirely true or entirely false. No middle ground whatsoever.

So, to them, questioning the method of death becomes the same as questioning the fact of that death.

---So it's possible, according to the actual text of the bible, that Jesus
---was not put on a cross at all.

---Philippians 2:16: "Holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain."

Sorry about the typo, it is Phil 2:8 ( Not Phil 2:16 ) "And being found in appearance as a man He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross"

All of the other passages I listed had established that Jesus was hanging on a cross when He breathed His last breath.

Quite the contrary, Heb 4:12 "The Word of God is alive and powerful sharper than any two edged sword , piercing even to dividing the soul and the spirit and the joints from the marrow, and is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."

Oh, ok. Since the misinterpreted, misread, and ill-translated book says THAT it must be precisely correct.

I think his point to riddler was about when Jesus died on the cross.

He already gave passages in his respone to the OP that do say something about a cross.

Yeah, I looked up the passages myself, and it doesn't look at all like they have anything to do with a cross, the Holy Wounds, or the Stigmata. So I'm puzzled why he is referencing them. The passages all talk about Jesus dying, but not how.

Your set of rules will get you in jail or killed pretty fast in today's culture. Of course, if you are talking about following just some of the rules, and not all of them ... I think that's how most people use the Bible already.

besides the fact that the Bible mentions Jesus' death on the cross in many passages

You sort of have to read the OPs article to understand what the point is. The researcher said that the word "cross" came from the greek word "Stauros". That word was translated as "cross" by scholars, but in his opinion, it could refer to any instrument of death that the Romans used.

So, the logical thing to do is look for other evidence that it was actually a cross. You would look for references of the Holy Wounds, and there are none, except for the spear in Jesus' side. And that would fit with the "death-on-a-stick" theory. Or you would look for evidence of the Stigmata, and there are no references to that either.

So outside the word "Stauros", there are no references to Jesus dying on a cross, and that word may have been mis-translated. It makes for an interesting subject matter.

Non-sequitur. That is irrelevant to the question of accuracy of linguistic translation. That is, unless your point is that every translation down the ages has always been divinely inspired and therefore must be accepted as literally accurate.

Haha I love maadmax's circular logic.

Or that's what it appears to be.

"What? You're calling the bible wrong?! I'll show you a passage from it that tells you it's not wrong!"

Maadmax: You realize what you're doing makes no sense? It's like person Y telling you person X is a liar, so you go to person X and ask him if he is a liar and he tells you no. And you then tell person Y that person X is not a liar because he said he isn't.

I agree, the words written in the Bible are worthless and meaningless as long as they remain there. Which is why they are of no value to you. I understand and am in complete agreement with your viewpoint. But when the Words are written in the heart(volitional part of the mind) they have a supernatural power that transforms, heals and restores. Say what you will, those of us who have experienced this power are not concerned. Yes, there are some minor translational issues but the transformative message comes through loud and clear for those who have ears to hear. And however Christ died (which did involve being nailed to a wooden structure) He died that we may live. :)
