Wasn't the original intent of the 401k to provide tax advantages to the employer to match the contributions of the employee? At least that's what I remember. CarrieByTheSea 0 #3 June 24, 2010 Quote Did something change where now it's not to their advantage to contribute? Many corporations affected by the economy quit 401k-matching; mine did a little more than a year ago. Prior to that, I also always had various percentage-matching."Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be." ~ Temple Grandin

Don't think I've ever been involved in a 401K where the company didn't contribute something. I've worked for only one small company which matched and IIRC it was minor (like fifty cents on the dollar for the first one percent of salary). The majority of big companies I've worked for did match. In most of the matching cases the match was not immediately vested.

If they do a certain matching (might be the 6% value), then they don't have to worry about issues where the "highly compensated" contribute at a higher rate than the lower salaried people. popsjumper 2 #7 June 24, 2010 My company matched half of what I put in up to 6% of my base pay. OK...that means I put in 6%, they put in 3%.My reality and yours are quite different. Remster 30 #8 June 24, 2010 Normally they match 100% of the first 4%, but, for a couple years now since our business has been doing well, they provide an additional 1% as long as we contribute something to our 401K.Remster

OK...that means I put in 6%, they put in 3%. true, but to get the max match, you also have to lay it out so you only put in the yearly max over the whole year period - if you over contribute and finish early, their match will end early and short of that actual 3% ...
